Introduction
I had bought the '98 A4 1.8T quattro for my son in 2002. It was a great car for him, until he put on a coffee-can exhaust and a blow-off valve. Combined with custom wheels, the resale had plummeted to $5,000 when I sold it in 2006. I was not happy- and won't let my younger son do the same thing to the A3.

Exterior Styling - 9
Obviously, a car from 1998 will look dated today, but it's still a very athletic design.

Interior Styling - 8
Can't keep up with current Audis- but I don't expect it to.

Exterior Build/Materials Quality - 9
Very good.

Interior Build/Materials Quality - 10
Perfect.

Engine Performance - 7
Without mods, it's superb, but with that stupid exhaust, it vibrates and wakes up the neighbors.

Handling/Braking - 10
Very good.

Fuel Efficiency - 9
Not quite as good as I expected- but still impressive considering its performance.

Available Features/Options - 10
I can't be sure of this (don't remember 1998 options list), but I'm sure it had quite a few.

Cost of Ownership - 5
It doesn't deserve a 5, but that's what happens when it's tuned.

Value - 10
I got a great deal on this one.

Conclusion
A fine piece of German engineering, tarnished by stupid add-ons that my son regrets now. I was going to use it in between the end of my A6's lease and buying the S4-- but it was painful to drive by then. I replaced it with the A3.
