Pros
  • +Unique look
  • +Good real life fuel economy (25avg/30hwy)
  • +Fun to drive (not a race/muscle car)
  • +No rust
  • +200,000 miles on the original clutch
  • +Surprisingly comfortable on the long road
  • +Hatchback style fits inside mountain bikes or snowboards and gear for two
Cons
  • -Expensive to keep running ($1000+ per visit)
  • -Difficult to work on, busy engine compartment
  • -Underdesigned interior plastic parts have broken off
  • -Retractable headlights/antenna are a perennial problem
  • -Shock mounts and suspension joints not designed for bad roads
  • -Not for people over 6 feet tall
  • -Rear seats are claustrophobic for adults
  • -Not good in deep (3"+) snow
  • -Just getting old

Conclusion
Retrospectively an under-appreciated effort on Ford's part to make a futuristic, economical, nimble, and fun cars for young people. The collaboration and later assimilation of Mazda is now proving the only hope for Ford to make competitive cars.
