The MacArthur Causeway reopened about 1 p.m. Thursday after a horrific crash involving a speeding sports car and a stopped SUV shut down the road for hours.

The shutdown of the westbound lanes caused backups on the Venetian and Tuttle causeways to the north.

The driver of the SUV was on his way home from his shift at a Miami Beach restaurant when he was hit from behind, his attorney Glen Z. Goldberg said.

Goldberg said Thursday afternoon that his client, Raul Alfonso was heading to his Sweetwater home when his SUV was Hit. Alonso, he said, is “in really bad shape” in the intensive care unit of Ryder Traume Center with broken bones and other issues.
