2007 BMW X5: Early Preview
(Photo: BMW) The new X5 promises to be an incredibly potent vehicle and perhaps a better track vehicle than many sport sedans as would suggest the Nurburgring spy video that is floating around on the internet. Sometime in 2008, we may even be treated to an "M" version of the X5. Hopefully, BMW will be mindful and not call it the M X5... Read Article

Why would you get this over the Range? Why?????It looks the same as the previous model, and is no where near the beauty of the Range Rover Sport..

I would get this over a Range Rover.

I would ALWAYS take this over the Range Rover, Range is good for Image and Cruisin, X5 suits my Driving Style better (And I am not one of those Supercilious BMW Types) Its just that the X5 allows you to push it as Hard as you would a 5-Series Wagon. Which is what i want for Now.

I am getting this over the Range Rover. The X5 is beautiful, where as the RR Sport is a Trucky looking truck. (good, nonetheless). The X5 is cheaper. Free service. Better dealers. Better reliability. Better depreciation. Seven seats (For those who need it). It's way more luxurious.

"It's way more luxurious."

mstangpny, this is the one untrue thing you said. The RR Sport, and of course the RR, have breathtaking interiors. Both have painstaking attention to detail and comfort like you've never seen, where the X5 interior is pretty BMW-generic. Some think that's a good thing, but I test drove a 530xi today for my wife and found the interior quite stark and bland.

Are you kidding me?
Compare
http://media.ford.com/newsroom/images/fordcom/range_rover_sport_interior.jpg
to the very last picture in the gallery.
The RR S is sharp and sporty, w/ the aluminum trim and narrow seats, while the X5 is soft and luxurious with that soft leather and elegant wood.
A much better comparo would be to compare a RR S and an X5 w/ the graphite or aluminum trim.

Very nice interior though. If I had to chose between the RR Sport & this, it would be the Range for sure. If I had the $$, I would go for the supercharged version. Regardless, I have a feeling that this car looks better in person. Pictures may not be doing it the justice it deserves

No question I'd buy this truck over a Range Rover. The design is up to par with Range Rover, the i-drive controllers been reworked yet again to more intuitive, & last but most definitly not least...This truck will be great fun to drive!

Not to mention an interior that could take the benchmark from Audi.

No, it starts at $44K, whereas the Q7 3.6 is $39K.

And your name would obviously imply that you'd pick the BMW over anything. It's redundant that you even make that statement.

Taking the interior benchmark from Audi? I wouldn't go that far. It's nice, but it's nothing different from the BMW usual.

He wasn't comparing the price to the Audi. he was comparing it to the RR.
Not everything is about Audi.

And I agree w/ you, munich, I like the interior better than the Q7 and RR S.
I thought I read an article in C&D that said they like the Ford Taurus's interior better than the RR S. I agree.

Landrover is currently the most unreliable brand on the market. I have some friends that own a Range Rover Sport Supercharged and you wouldnt believe the amount of trouble they have with their cars.

So, I would buy the X5.

The Range Supercharged is a much sweeter ride than this, Its a nicer car to look at, nicer touch screen navigation, nicer "cosy" interior, more prestigous and that supercharged engine is quiet powerfull, to take this crappy bimmer over the range SS you are either mad or just short of cash..And I am hoping its the second reason you guys are choosing this X5..

I know you are not that Dense

Range Rover Sport Supercharged 4.2L:
385Bhp // 550Nm // 0-60mph 7.2Secs

2007 BMW X5 4.8L:
350Bhp // 472.5Nm // 0-60mph 6.4 secs

So unless you know something that the rest of us don't know, please Be Quiet.

Also over here the X5 4.8 with a few Options is more Expensive than the Range Sport Supercharged

I thought the Range does 6.9? Anyways, as I said before the Range wins over this X3 or X5 or whatever it is, on the basis that it is shockingly nice looking and as Jeremy Clarckson put it, you feel "cacooned" while driving the car, everything seems to be within your reach, plus, the car is great for offroading..There are some draw backs, huge gas consumption and Land Rover's unreliability issues, however all in all, it is a better option than the X5, seriously, LOOK AT IT, its the same old shit, no even worse, it looks like an X3 now..When you drive a range you FEEL the power and prestige..

The RR Sport interior is VERY bad and it has a ladder frame.

The regular Range Rover SC is better though than the X5, it may not be as fast, but its interior is better and it may be more comfortable.

BTW, why doesn't BMW use the engine in the 550, 750, 650 with 360 hp?

RR SC > X5 > RR Sport

no, it has a monocoque onto which a frame is bolted to provide extra stiffness.
but i too am not a fan of the RRSport.
it's an imitation range rover, and it is very small inside.

Its the Same Engine
They are all 4.8L Engines this one has been Detuned to 350Hp thats all.

The only 5.0L BMW has is the V10 in the M5 & M6 Vehicles.

If I had to choose between the RR-Sport or this X5. I would have to say the X5 (althought it now looks like a bloated X3), since the RR is the most unreliable vehicle in the whole auto market. Sad to say, but even Ford has a better reliability than the RR.

I can think of 503 reasons not to get the new X5...or 503 hp as in the ML63 AMG. Unless of course they produce a 500+ hp variant.

Hurry up BMW.

I don't mean to boast but I currently own a 2006 BMW 4.8is and a Supercharged Range Rover Sport. Simply put, I am trying to sell my BMW for another Range Rover Sport for my wife. Yes the BMW is a second and a half faster....but i'm sure we can all wait that extra second. The new sport is also made in a completely different factory that the larger range rover and doesnt share a part in common, therefore being much more reliable than the larger version.

The X5 isn't even a direct competitor to the Range Rover. It competes directly with the Audi Q7, Mercedes ML, & Porsche Cayenne.

Like I said before I got the hook up on the salesman handbook for the new X5 at my local BMW dealer, so I pretty much know everything there is to know about the new X5...So I'm telling you right now, it will be top of it's class.

The X5 is in a different league than the RRS and the Full Size Range Rover.

The X5 is a onroad pavement SAV and to compare them is rather trivial.
The RRS does 85% of what the X5 does on pavement yet the X5 is nowhere near 5% of what the RRS or the RR can do off-road.

I personally would get the RRS (and I have a deposit on an 07) because it is a true-offroader. It beats the old P38 and current land cruisers in terms of wheel articulation, ground clearance. The one I have ordered has both center and rear locking differentials. Even the current Land Cruisers do not have an option for a rear locker. The X5 does not even have low-range. If the RR or RRS did not have the offroad hardware, I reckon it would be faster than the X5 or Cayenne. However, due to their off-road hardware, I would gladly take the 2-3 second slower 0-60 times. The ladder frame on the RRS and the dual transfer tranny takes up at least 800-1200 pounds. If the RRS was built like the Freelander, I think it would be more in line with the X5's on-road performance. Heck, I believe the Freelander smokes the X5 off-road and that isn't asking too much.

So it depends on what you want. If you like the sedan like feeling, get the X5. I would rather get a 5 series station wagon or Audi Allroad. If you want real SUVs that can wade 2 feet of water and climb rocks, get a Land Rover.

sure the RR/RR sport /freelander are better choices off road, but BMW never had intension on making an off road SAV. They owend RR and maked the RR the new one, so they cut easily had made and better off road car, but did not. They made a car better on road, becaus no one would dream of taking their X5 off road.. its a drivers car on the road.. and problably the best of them.

You will never convince me it looks better than the RRSS, infact to be honest, it doesnt LOOK nicer than the new ML, or the Infiniti FX or even and I cant believe I am saying this, the Audi Q7...It looks the same..It looks ugly..Bimmers are ugly..end of story..
