2008 Motor Trend Truck of the Year Winner: Toyota Tundra
When Toyota first announced it was coming out with a full-size pickup truck to go head to head with the big boys from Ford, Chevy, and Dodge, the question arose as to whether an import could truly compete as a heavyweight. The answer is in: The new Toyota Tundra is now ready to take on any American-made pickup truck -- on all levels.

Superiority? Toyota is pulling no punches by introducing one of the biggest, strongest, and most capable vehicles in the segment, as well as investing billions in a new state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in the heart of truck country-San Antonio, Texas. Significance? With Toyota looking to more than double its presence in the hotly contested half-ton marketplace, the Tundra represents one of the most highly anticipated new vehicle launches in many years -- car or truck. Value? The new Tundra offers three different powertrains (one V-6 and two V-8s), with the 5.7-liter V-8 a high-tech wonder and torque monster -- and is among among the most powerful engines in any half-ton configuration. Toyota's platform has the entire segment covered with three different bed sizes, three separate wheelbases covering five different cab and bed configurations, combined with three different trim packages (Tundra Grade, SR5, and Limited) in 4x4 and 4x2 drivetrains -- 44 different truck flavors to interested buyers, from work truck to luxury touring.

Offering that kind of variety right out of the gate is impressive and ambitious; in fact, some might say too ambitious. The recent launch of the new Tundra has not been without a few hiccups. Several months ago, an early output of camshafts in the 5.7-liter V-8 were failing. Toyota tells us they traced down all the affected parts to a specific batch and have since made the corrections to the design. No failures have surfaced since. More recently, there have been some reports of transmission shudder under certain low-speed conditions, which dealers have traced to a torque converter issue. Toyota says these incidents were isolated and have also been resolved. And finally, there's been chatter on the Internet concerning tailgate problems, which Toyota is in the process of tracking down. Our guess is many of these stories spread like wildfire, given the lightning-rod effect this new truck is having with enthusiasts and the speed with which an Internet item can travel. With all that said, let's take a deeper look at what's special about our 2008 winner.

Toyota purposely held lauchning the 2007 Tundra last year so they would fall out of MT's 1 year time frame for eligibility, because they knew the Chevy Silverado would crush it. Technically, the Toyota launched in 2007 model year but did not meet the lauch date criteria set by MT. MT should have left them out this year for that stunt. Toyota won this year due to a lack of options in new trucks launching. Keep in mind, I am by no means a Chevy guy.

And Who do GM have to compete with last year? Almost the whole field was GM, The Sierra/Silverado, The Escalade, Avalance, Tahoe, Almost all of the competitors were GM, Of course they won last year.

I don't get it with recalls and all. So motor trends recomends a truck that has bad quality and a ton of recalls. How much is toyota paying motor trend.

Cars have recalls, get over it. It does not speak to the quality or reliability of he vehicle.

This seems like some kind of 'make-up call.' for naming the Cadillac CTS as car of the year. I guess they couldn't choose the (correct choice for truck of the year) Silverado and have GM sweep both awards.

A truck the looks to miss sales goals
A truck hit by a list of serious recalls
A truck you can't drive down a bumpy road without the bed trying to rip itself of the frame.

Good Job Motor Trend.

I do remember 1991 Chevrolet Caprice Classic LTZ,2006 Honda Ridgeline, and the 1991 Mazda Navajo

sales goals....Toyota said 200,000 in first year, the Truck has not been on sale for all of 2007, yet is still close to 200,000 for this year. the real 200,000 cant be counted until February.
recalls....a fact of life for cars nowadays.
bumpy road....internet hype over a minor annoyance to a few buyers.

stop the hating.

GM finally makes a good truck and you talk as if they've been doing it forever......When was the last time GM of even acknowledged for making a good truck? Yes, this new one is good, but come on, GM's trucks have been at the bottom of almost every bodies ranking for almost a decade. Even with the call backs the Tundra is still a better truck. I bet if I were to switch the badges on these trucks, you'd be singing a different tune.

You're an idiot. GM's trucks have always been powerful, reliable, and well made. The only complaint was the use of that terribly antiquated interior that went on for 10 years too long. Even when GM's cars were crap, the trucks were good. That's what kept them in business when they just surrendered the passenger car market to Toyota. If it weren't for the viability and popularity of GM's trucks and large SUVs, they probably wouldn't have survived this long.

08 Titan is still a better looking truck inside and out. I bet with the 08 redo it is even on par in terms of quality

I believe the best truck available currently was chosen last year. Since they can't/won't choose the same truck 2 years in a row the Tundra kinda wins by default. And I'm not bashing it either but you can't overlook the fact the it has gone through a few growing pains this year.

You know what... I forgot that GM's new trucks already won last year's truck of the year award. This award doesn't really mean anything... It's not like the car market where lots of new models debut every year. the truck of the year award just gets passed around and is awarded to the company whose truck has been most recently redesigned. Next year, Ford will win if they drop a new F150 this year. And the year after that, it will be Dodge when they drop the new Ram.

I'm serious! Why did it win this award? It doesn't set any new standards for the class, it's Toyota's biggest PR nightmare to date, it's not exactly beautiful, the interior is described by all testers as "cheap," the engines guzzle as much gas as any other pickup, the tailgate is useless...

I think the only reason it won was because it was the ONLY new truck this year!

when it comes to full-size pickups, the domestics can do it because they have been for almost a century. right now I find the silverado/sierra the best contenders for this segment and would consider one if I need a full size pickup.

I don't like any cars that Ford makes or half of what GM makes but, to compare those companies with America is just stupid! They don't represent what America is! If you want to get a real taste of it than look at the advancements in computer/electronic field. Look at the advancements in the space program. Look at all the Ivy League and other top schools. USA leads any other country in those fields along with many others. It's just that we fall short when it comes to Automotive but, hey, no-one is perfect. Don't compare ANY manufacturer with its respective country because that's not a valid comparison.

That's just one number among many where the Tundra will out do the Silverado!!! And its power band is much better as well.
Torque:
Toyota 401
Chevy 375

And the torque occurs at the lowest rpm of any other pickup. more torque and at a lower rpm plus a 6 speed means greater towing capacity, although i think this is overkill. If you need that kind of power get a superduty or silverado hd. Who needs this in a half ton. Just think how much better the fuel economy would be.

How in the world did this happen? The Tundra is not only ugly but it's killing Toyota's rep. in the full size truck market. I'm out on it. Give me the old Tundra anyday.
