Latest pictures of the Audi A3 Saloon cold weather testing in Scandinavia, ahead of its launch later this year

Our spies have scaught the new Audi A3 Saloon undergoing cold weather testing in Scandinavia. The car was unveiled in concept form at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show and will go on sale in the UK towards the end of this year.

Like the new Audi A3 hatchback, the A3 Saloon will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform, which also underpins the Mk7 VW Golf, SEAT Leon and Skoda Octavia.

Although not expected to be a big seller in Europe compared to the A3 hatch, the A3 Saloon is designed to appeal to buyers in the US and China, where it will go head to head with the Mercedes CLA.

The concept car featured an upgraded RS3 powertrain, with the 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine’s output boosted to 402bhp. That power reaches all four wheels via a seven-speed S Tronic gearbox.

However, the production A3 Saloon is expected to feature the same range of petrol and diesel engines as the A3 hatch, with front and four-wheel-drive quattro drivetrain options.

Like the Mercedes CLA, which is expected to cost around £3,000 more than the Mercedes A-Class on which it’s based, the A3 Saloon will be priced at a premium to the hatchback range that starts at £19,825 for a five-door A3 Sportback.
