For those of you not plugged into the UK car scene, there's one particularly interesting little fact. Personalized number plates that can be had in the US for nominal fees can run thousands of dollars in the UK when the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) holds its annual auction.

And in some cases, into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In the latest case of ridiculousness, a British collector and Ferrari dealer, John Collins, paid 518,000 GBP to have the privilege of displaying "25 O" on his Ferrari 250 SWB. This specific 250 is special as it formerly belonged to music legend Eric Clapton.

Using today's exchange rate, that means Collins paid over $810,000 USD just to have his plate read something extra special.

While that's already staggering, according to reports this came after he plunked down over 130,000 GBP for "250 L" which will be displayed on his Ferrari 250 GT Lusso.

The funds are diverted back to the UK government.


...John said: "I was just determined to own them, it was just a case of how much I was going to have to pay for the privilege. I’m not too sure [what my limit was], it could possibly have been the first £1 million personalised registration..."
