This week our friends from Honda revealed the all-new, 2017 Civic Hatchback. While the US market has been more than happy with its four-door sedan and coupe variants, the big H decided that one more couldn’t hurt.

We’re not so sure we agree.

You see, here’s the thing. I could understand if the Honda Civic was a standard-looking sedan like the last-gen Civic. But in its latest iteration, it already looks rather hatch-like in terms of design. So, making a vehicle that already looks like a hatch even more hatchback-ish is seemingly silly.

It’s kind of like doing what BMW did with the 3-Series Gran Turismo and the 4-Series Gran Coupe. While I understand there are actual differences to separate the two, the reality is that the buying public isn’t going to be swayed when the exteriors look largely the same.

It’s not like those BMWs are hot sellers. Why else do you think so many dealers have been using the 3GT and 4GCs to hand out to customers as service loaners?

Back to the Honda. So, not only does it look not too differentiated from its sibling, the US market is not so kind to five doors. That said, we have to ask: Is the all-new Civic Hatchback DOOMED before it even hits The States’ shores?

What say you, Spies?
