Although the chaps formerly of the BBC's Top Gear play a trio of idiots at times, it's clear they're not so stupid. That's because Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May have landed a staggeringly large deal from e-commerce powerhouse, Amazon (AMZN).

According to the latest reports, the threesome plus Executive Producer, Andy Wilman, landed a deal worth a jaw dropping $250 million USD. This gets Amazon three seasons of content.

No word if the deal accounts for salaries and production, or merely salaries for the talent.

If you're wondering why Amazon has been so keen on paying so much for content, there is method to the madness. If you've been following shares of Amazon, this year the company's seen an explosion in its valuation due to its rising subscription base and Amazon Web Services (AWS). Of course investors are concerned due to Amazon not exactly being a profitable business, though it did turn out a profit for Q2 2015. The question now looms whether or not this significant investment into talent and content will drive the Prime subscription base.

Amazon certainly picked the show to do it. For several years its been rumored to be the world's most popular program with over 300 million global viewers.

The unnamed series premiere is slated to happen in 2016. One catch: rumors state The Stig will be no more.

Amazon have shelled out a whopping £160 million to sign Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May up for a new car show as a "landmark global deal".

The trio have signed up for three seasons, which will be produced by their long-time executive producer Andy Wilman and available exclusively to Amazon Prime customers...
