Audi's Board Member of Technical Development Wolfgang Durheimer says a diesel-electric hybrid supercar program is "still alive".

In other words, a model sitting on top of the R8 is planned to tackle the recently unveiled McLaren P1 and LaFerrari, as well as the upcoming Porsche 918 Spyder. Durheimer told AutoExpress such a car "deserves to be built" and he will be "fighting for this idea".

If it will see the light of day, the range-topping Audi will probably be a LeMans-inspired diesel-electric hybrid developed using what they have learned from the R18 race program. Previous rumors have indicated an R20 moniker for a road-legal version of the R18.
