Audi will kiss goodbye the current A1 model with a proper RS version, scheduled for launch in January 2017 according to the latest reports.

The new, ultra-hot hatch will be powered by a 280hp version of the Group’s turbocharged 2.0-litre EA888 engine that will send its power to all four wheels, says Autocar.

It is understood that the upcoming RS1 will be a sister car to the also planned VW Polo R, with Audi benchmarking the Mini John Cooper Works in terms of handling. A six-speed manual gearbox will be offered as standard, while a new seven-speed dual clutch automatic that can handle the torque load of the engine will be an option.
