Audi R8s selling for double the RRP on eBay
Out of the 11 or 13 cars Audi of America has delivered, two have already turned up on eBay. Such is the power of the online auction house that car companies have begun using it as a way to gauge the prices they can charge for future models. One executive revealed to Automotive News how he had to convince his German bosses that the absolute highest price Audi could charge for the mid-engined sports car was US$115,660.

But the fact they’ve turned up on eBay with buyers asking upwards of $241,000 and $185,000 has made Audi wonder whether they could have charged another few thousand dollars on top.

"Asking" prices on ebay mean nothing is no one is willing to buy it. I actually looked up the auction and the "buy it now" price is $185k, but there are no bids on the vehicle either.

Vehicles in this price range, especially sports cars, are more of a special order thing anyway...if someone is going to pay that much they'll get the options and colours they want. I feel its priced right the way it is.

The car is shown in front of a nice house, the seller says s/he has multiple cars...

Hmmm, Ben Bernanke take note, this moment is the start of the recession, rich people unloading their toys; this person does not seem to be a speculator.

no one ever wins win cars are priced way over MSRP. Very few manufacturers are able to do it, successfully. Ferrari does it cause the dealers get the first shot at selling the car pre-owned if a client buys it and wants to sell it with the year.

I just went onto AutoTrader.com and ran a search for Audi R8's and as of today there are 10 available for MSRP. Why would anyone pay over MSRP, when there are some available?

because autotrader list the cars in dealers inventory at msrp automaticly

it doesen't mean you can buy them for that price. We got calls from people on our car from autotrader but of course the car was sold already

i tell you what find a dealer that will sell a good car for msrp and i will pay you big time for it. I have had dealers calling me offering well over msrp for our car that we sold

Exactly! That's why these eBay models aren't selling.

I would just order mine from Audi, in my colors, with my options. It's worth the wait, rather than paying $100K over sticker just to get one now on eBay.

s4 you can order one but the list for most dealers are 2 to 3 years out

and msrp is not a guarentee

Perhaps they can target the "early adopters" who bought iPhones for $600. Patience my wealthy friends, patience.

completely agree ... As with 90% of the auto buying public, just wait a little bit. You may now be able to sell it over MSRP, but at who's cost. IN about a year from now, the cars will bring MSRP. This will further alienate the buying public about Audi in the US. We are much more fickle in the US.

What? What would happen to Audi? This is how it goes with all hot new sports cars (and products)- very expensive, selling for over sticker at first. But it dies down. This has happened with every single one, honestly.

Hm. Great things are worth waiting for. Maybe this can be my next-next car.

if you got a 20 grand discount you couldn't get this car
bmw4 get over it

i have a nice S8 for you if you want it as a boobie prize

Audi should definitely charge customers a premium to the extent they can...They can then plow the profits into discounts on slow-moving models like the A8 - $10,000 discounts presently on those in NYC - to move those transactions closer to what their true market price should be.

I work for a dealership in which we sell BMW, Mercedes & Range Rover. Our policy is to not sell new cars over MSRP. I worked at locations where they did that and nobody wins. Come a year from now and the customer wants to get rid of that car, then what? It always looks bad. I understand about trying to maximize profits, but at who's expense. 9 out of 10 customers will not come back to the dealer after that happens

so if you had a car that a customer could turn around and sell for $100,000 profit then you would say go do it? Come on.

You might not mark up the car but you are a small dealer in a small market or you sell lojack for $5,000 with another $5,000 in rate

You see what people need to understand and realize is that most people who "have to have it first" will pay the premium and that does not damadge the market as much as you would think. I know people for instance who bought the iPohone and could care less gthat it's now 399. They paid to be one of the first with it.EvilHomer has a very valid point, most stores that sell at MSRP make it up somewhere. I have seen too many clients buy highline cars and then sell them right after and have replacement cars on order. Wealthy people are business people first, that is something we have to remember in this business. And BMW4me4ever, your store makes up for it on the Range Rovers in the service department. Damn near need an Amex Black card to maintian those things...lol I plan on getting myself into an R8 but I'm like S4 I'll wait.
