AutoSpies.com first to catch photos of the next Lexus RX SUV
At first glance, this undisguised prototype might look like a normal Lexus RX350 sport utility vehicle. After close examination, however, it becomes apparent that there are some significant differences. The light colored vertical stripe just forward of the front doors indicates that the front end has been lengthened an inch or two. The ends of the front bumpers are modified and covered with tape, as are the lower parts of the rear doors. The rear bumper has also been cut away slightly just aft of the rear wheels. All these changes indicate the body has been modified to make the vehicle slightly longer, and to adapt to a slight relocation of both front and rear axles.

Now notice that the tail lights don’t fit flush with the outer fenders, and are not wide enough to reach the side of the vehicle. Similarly, the rear glass hatch is too narrow to reach the full distance between the vehicle’s sides. So the body panels on this vehicle have also been relocated to make it wider than the current model RX350. So this vehicle is really a mule, using the body panels of the normal RX350, but very cleverly modified for extra length, wheelbase, and greater width. Under this modified body lies the new platform of the next generation RX350 which the test engineers are putting through its paces.

The one part of the vehicle that really is new – the side mirrors. Note the reshaped mirrors which include the turn signal lights, a feature used by many rival vehicles, but so far not seen on the RX350.

Based on this information, one can expect the next RX350 to be slightly longer, wider, and to have a greater wheelbase than it does now. With a vehicle as popular as the current RX350, however, Lexus is unlikely to make any very radical changes. Styling will likely keep a shape that is quickly recognizable as evolutionary rather than all new.

The new RX will also likely stay with its current 5-passenger capacity, since customers wanting three rows of seats can get that in the bigger Lexus SUV’s, the GX470 and the LX 570. Base engine will probably continue to be shared with the Toyota Highlander, that now being (for 2008) a 3.5 liter DOHC V-6 making 270 hp. The Lexus will likely also continue to offer a hybrid engine, the 3.3 liter V-6 which combined with its electric motors also makes 270 hp.

Lexus will be introducing an all new LX570 for the 2008 model year, so it is likely that a new RX350 won’t be scheduled until 2009.

The photo set includes 5 photos of the prototype mule, plus an artist’s concept of what the next generation RX350 will probably look like.

in the rendering from the windshield forward to me it looks like a cross between a yaris a camry with es lights, and in my opinion from the windshield back it looks liked one of the mazda cx-9 or cx-7, just look towards the back and it shares design ques

I liked it better several years ago when it had a matching alloy spare wheel in a proper wheel well inside the vehicle.

Then what needs to be changed, mitch? You have said before that the new RX will have three rows of seats, but it still seems to me like that is completely nonsensical and unnecessary when there are two other Lexus trucks with three rows. There's not much else in this article that would seem incorrect: the engine doesn't need an upgrade and the car is most certainly not going to get smaller.

Great that Lexus not making RX a 7-seater. The current RX is in almost perfect size, maybe one or two inches more leg room will be perfect.

What do you mean by that? If Lexus is a legitimate competitor to Mercedes-Benz, then Hyundai is the equal of Lexus. Anonymous asian car, borrowed styling and packaging elements, ubiquitous blandness. In my eyes, the name Hyundai is every bit as prestigious as Lexus. Not very.

270hp possibly won't be enough although sharing powertrains with Highlander will cut costs.

The next RX needs: a 300+hp gas version and a 330hp hybrid version (270hp+ a 60hp battery pack).

BMW4me4ever, that's because this IS the current one, just stretched out. It is literally a mule of the 2007 RX350 that has been added to, with the chassis of the NEW, DIFFERENT-LOOKING version under it.

LOL, 43LE, yes, the new X5 looks so radical compared to the old one.

43LE, you really like that rendering? The current RX, while a chick car, still looks nice, but that photoshop is just ugly. Lexus would not mess it up that badly- it looks like someone took a CX-7 and an RX350, but them together and flattened the result.

The first picture is new, the rest are the same current model. I like the front on the first picture. This car needs to be turned into a rear wheel drive, a big longer, optional 7 seats and it will rock!

After seeing the test mule, I'm more convinced than ever that the next RX will be the Lexus version of the new Highlander. A little larger than the current model with at least the option of a 3rd row seat. Engine will be a 3.5 liter V-6, but may be retuned to near GS spec giving over 300 hp. Transmission stays a 5 speed since the 6 speed Camry/ES350 unit does not have provisions for AWD. Price? How about $1000 more than the current model to cover additional capability. A loaded Highlander Limited is over $40K, so RX350 with similar equipment at $50k is not out of line.

Compared to Mercedes ML350, this would be a much larger, nicer vehicle and still have a $5K price advantange with similar equipment.

V-8? not a chance. This is Lexus' best seller, so they will not screw with a winning formula. If gasoline were still $2/gal, maybe a performance version but at $3/gal and the excellent performance of the 3.5 engine, why screw with a new platform
