BMW Hammers Audi at Its Own Game
"These many qualities of BMW’s electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system give not only the BMW X5 and X3 SAVs, but rather all BMWs equipped with xDrive truly outstanding driving qualities at all times. The system is recognized as so beneficial that BMW has now become the world’s most successful manufacturer of all-wheel-drive vehicles in the premium segment."

Imagine, BMW outselling Audi in the all wheel drive segment...simply stunning.

Always Follow Audi.....

BMW will never be the "world’s most successful manufacturer of all-wheel-drive vehicles in the premium segment." BMW's line of AWD vehicles is miniscule to Audi. Also, in every test done by every review, there has never been an awd system as good at getting traction and road holding as Audi. BMW xdrive is a joke and another piece of S**t that has come out of BMW. I bet we will never see an xdrive car go up a ski jump ramp. Keep dreamin CPillar

Where do you people come up with these sentences ???
With what vehicle Lineup does BMW achieve this amazing Feat???
Never forget that most Premium AUDIs are sold with the Quattro option and Excluding the X5 and X3 and the recent introduction of the 3 Series Xi models(2003), Again how do BMW achieve the above stated feat ???

NEWSFLASH

Audi sold 25 million cars last year. That is way more than BMW in the last 10 years.

Audi hammers BMW at its own game...

The RS4 simply destroys the M3 in a straight line. On the track, the RS4 embarrasses the M3. Audi's incredible high-revving, naturally-aspirated V8 is a marvel of engineering.

The ultimate driving machine has arrived--the RS4.

BMW follows Audi like the M3 follows the RS4 (by a bus length).

I have to agree. BMW's XDrive is no match for Audi's Quattro.

BMW focuses on RWD sports sedans for the most part. They offered XDrive only as an alternative to Audi's Quattro and Mercedes' 4Matic in order to keep some BMW customers who desired this as well as attract new buyers looking for an AWD BMW.

BMW will never outsell Audi when it comes to AWD cars. Internationally at least, Audi's tend to be Quattro (most Euro Audi's are FWD).

It is verified that BMW manufactures more (read sell) more awd vehicles than any other premium manufacturer. However, that does it mean it's better or worse than Audi's Quattro. There are a few interesting points worthy of commenting. 1. Almost all Audi's are sold with Quattro and there sales were significantly behind BMWs. verses BMW selling a third of there vehicles with X Drive. This data can be ascertained from Automotivenews.com . Also BMW showed tremendous proficiency in building awd vehicles in the early eighties that at the time was more technologically advanced than quatrro in the 325ix. Check the magazine archives of audi v bmw comparisons and you'll see that BMW came out on top. I own both Audi and BMW and I am pleased with both. However, the X Drive in my opinion works way quicker than the Quattro. BMW brand of performance was growing so rapidly that they didn't have to continue to market awd system that was heavy at the time and would dampen performance. Also because the VW group shares parts with its siblings throughout the range from a financial perspective and economies of scale BMW XDrive is more than likely more expensive but more effective. But when its all said and done within the same segmaent the consumer ultimately determines the better product and of course that would be BMW. Can't compare BMW to Ford but you can compare to Ford's Jaguar Brand , or VW's Audi, or DC's Merecedes Benz and BMW comes out on top. They are the best at what they do. Can't argue that.

The Truth 101.

Truth:
I have driven both BMW and Audi sedan and the x5 in the rain and snow. The pick up may be a quicker in the x5 compared to the Quattro sedans (exclude the all road), but that is about it, anything else I would have serious doubts about, because the traction on the sedans are good for Bmw but it definitely wasn't Quattro performance.

logical---keep just keep talking long enough, until I can get my zipper open to shut you up.

just one thing "please show me any fricking actual technology that made its way into this silly overpriced VW. If you look at eh M5/6 you can actually see the engine is a direct result of the v10 BMW ran in Fomrula 1"

FSI and formula one is now running on v8.
considering the m5 uses a 5.0 and formula one uses a sub 2.0 that revs to 15000+, the realtionship is quite strained.

Hmm a blanket statement with no proof. Unimpressed, back it up with real fact not opinions. BMW X Drive cars have paled in test after test when compared to the quattro. Yes the SAV segment BMW could have been called the king at one time, but Audi has just entered that segment, so the tide will change.

but you can't say fsi isn't derived from lemans and then say the v10 is.
not disputing the fact that the m5 engine is derived from the formula1 engine.

pimple faced geek?????

what are you, a girl who's lost her barbie?

and me getting my facts right?
i quote "So... they make them heavier and in general do not perform like a comparable BMW"
the 3 series is heavier than the a4, by (on average) 60 kg, the 1 series by 40, the a6 is heavier than the 5 series, but it is longer and wider, and has awd on many models, the a8 is 120 kg lighter than the 7 series.
the a4 cab weighs the same as the 3 series convertible, and it is longer and taller.
don't believe me?
compare data from this site
http://www.parkers.co.uk/choosing/specs/
look at the weight at the top (it is an average of the range, click on the model to see a more detailed weight)

The evidence:

http://www.worldcarfans.com/news.cfm/country/gcf/newsID/2060808.004/bmw/new-bmw-x5-unveiled-in-detail

BMW also makes alot more money as well. The Audi doubters can sue BMW if that will soothe their egos (as will those 25 million in car sales).

For those who like to compare a 5+ year old
M3 with a brand new RS4, go ahead. It will be a different story in a few months.

Homer,

I am not making anything up. It seems to have hit a sore spot with you. I agree that quattro is a better system, but the market is saying otherwise - and the market is the final arbiter.
Audi following? Well, they are tryig to catch up in sales and are way behind in profits, so I guess that would mean that they are behind and following. Looks like the new X5 will eat tyhe Q7's lunch as well, with a new M3 on the way that will probably equal the RS4's numbers, then a M3 CSL that will be even better....

First of all hybrid technology is a huge fad that only sells because it makes people feel warm and fuzzy because they think they are helping the environment. Case and point, Ford waving the white flag on hybrids. They don't achieve the gas mileage they promise and the creation and disposal of batteries is terrible for the environment.

Secondly, FSI is directly derived from the Audi R8 Lemans car. It is clearly one of the reasons they have won Lemans so many times. I'd also like to remind you that Audi has never blown an engine in the entirety of the Lemans program.
And BMW raced in Lemans for a period of time but stopped. Likely because the expense didn't make sense when they keep getting demolished by Audi.

CPILLAR your comment about the market dictating what is best does not make sense. Does this mean that say Walmart makes a better product simply because they sell more?

As one poster said above I'd like to see any racing victories BMW has using the xDrive system. There are none. While on the other hand, Audi is continually penalized or banned in racing because of their technologies.

Logical, forget the new RS4, let's look at the old RS4, a car that absolutely killed anything that BMW had to offer and it was a freaking 4 door wagon. Make sure to compare cars in the same class. Also I'm sure there are many that would agree that Audi wins in the ultra luxury section i.e. A8 W12 vs 760il.

RacerRX, The 550 vs A6 4.2 . Yea i know BMW has a bigger engine displacement, but their in the same league.

diablo, shut up and get ur facts straight. The M5s engine won the engine of the year award + The best engine between 4.0 l to 5.0 l + the best engine between 5.0l and 6.0 l. Is that a loser engine? And BTW y the hell r u comparing the 7 year old X5 with the All new Q7? Its as stupid as comparing the current M3 with the new RS4. And if u said that the new M3 and RS4 rnt comparable, y do u compare the old ones? BTW the loser engine ur talking about won 2nd place in 2003/2004. They almost beat ferrari the legend of raccing. Y not compare the new X5 with the Q7? The Q7 doesnt have a chance AT ALL. good luck next time in gessing the facts dude. Try harder , u almost tricked some idiots :p
