BMW M5 vs. Merc. CLS 55 AMG Comparison Test Video
Here is another comparison test for today. This time it is the BMW M5 and the Mercedes CLS 55 AMG. The test is from the German TV channel, DSF, so for me and the lucky ones who know German it is perfectly fine, but for those that don't, you should just try and read what it says on the screen and you'll be fine. Awesome video. I'd be happy with both. I wouldn't doubt that the M5 has the dynamic edge, but the AMG CLS looks very capable. Awesome cars.

I picked up a little German when I spent time over there, but I didn't understand 95% of this video. Just the occassional familiar word...

CLS is still the better looking car. It is one sexy beast. Whereas the M5 has a nice grunt but the design isn't as appealing as the Merc's. Much like most of BMW's designs, they're not as smooth as Merc's. However the new 3-series coupes are pretty smooth.

BMW530i:

Oh no doubt i'd be happy with both too =). For sure the M5 is bred for performance. The CLS is more of a four-door saloon than what it's marketed as. Both are great performance cars.

I agree with you Agent63. The CLS looks more classy and elegant while at the same time sporting an aggressive stance and look. The M5 tends to be less elegant but more aggressive. Awesome rides.

The M5 is dynamic and absolutely stunning. The Mercedes is beautiful...but looks like it is more for the geriatric crowd. Every grandpa should buy one.

Yeah, the CLS is one hot vehicle. In a few years, I am looking to replacing my '01 E39 530i. But I am thinking of saving up for the new CL-Class from Benz when I retire in around 5 years. That car is just lovely.

M5 is the best. although i think the CLS looks gorgeous.

Anyways, do any of the BMW fans know how the new 3 series drives? I heard that the 325i drives like last years 330i.

You can apply the sound of the engines along with their exterior styling. M5 is much younger and racier with the engine emitting the well-recognized M higher-pitched tones. CLS is much more mature and stately with the engine sound being more of a low growl. Both are awesome cars and I find myself torn between both.

On Top Gear, the less dynamic CLS was almost a second faster than the M5 in the hands of "The Stig" on the track! And in the CLS you can'tcompletely defeat the stability control as you can in the M5. Bottom line at this level is that if you only can have one, it should be the CLS. your wife/GF/partner can enjoy tooling around in the CLS, fastor slow. Whereas, in the M5, they almost need an engineering/programming degree to set it up and drive. Even BMW is trying to find a way to dump the SMG transmission for a DSG. Even the new Z4M's don't have an SMG option! Wonder why? Oh, I drive a Z4 3.0 and wifey has a CLS.
