sales percentage average? I've never even heard of this metric for measurement. Feel free to explain it to me.

Audi's sales growth percentage was higher than BMW's in the U.S., if that's what you're saying, 15.4% to 12.6%. That's very nice, if percentages are all that matter. Unfortunately percentages don't matter as much as units, since 15.4% of a small number is a lot less than 12.6% of a much larger one. Audi growing 15.4% means they increased sales by 990 units, from 6431 to 7421. BMW growing 12.6% means they increased sales by 2629 units, from 20822 to 23451.

2629 extra is a lot more than 990 extra. Audi's growth percentage, while higher, still means they're actually falling further behind. Audi would have had to increase sales by 40.9% just to keep pace. If this month were typical of the entire year, and Audi increased sales by a constant 15.4%, BMW would only have to increase them by 4.7% to stay ahead by the same amount. And BMW doesn't have to grow in huge numbers to widen the gap further. If Audi increases sales 25%, BMW only has to grow 7.7%. There you can clearly see why "big percentages" look nice, but matter less than units.

Not sure how that factors into that whole "sales percentage average" thing you mentioned. But more is more.

Not sure where you learned your math (if you learned it at all). I was somewhat impressed at someone on this forum actually doing some math until I kept on reading about how Audi cannot catch up to BMW regardless of having a higher percentage sales increase. You see Rob, this is why you failed math (if you didn't, you most certainly cheated). If Audi continues its higher percentage sales it WILL undoubtedly surpass BMW. The question everyone should be debating is not whether the percentages lie but whether Audi can maintain a higher percentage than BMW in sales increases.

Not surprisingly, the smarter people that buy Audis are the minority thus we are at a disadvantage in numbers compared to the less gifted -people like YOU (who pretend to know)-that favor the motorcycle maker.

As a side note, did you even bother to consider the global sales trend Rob? of course not, you're also probably too narrow minded to think that the US is the entire universe.

Additional Fun reading material: (http://www.globalinsight.com/SDA/SDADetail9222.htm)

"Audi global sales grew 9.2% year-on-year (y/y) in April to 84,736 units. The premium brand therefore sold 332,900 vehicles worldwide in the first four months of the year, up 9.4% compared to the same period a year ago. In a statement, Audi said it enjoyed strong growth on European export markets, with an increase of 11.9% to 39,457 units in April and 13.5% to 165,221 units in the first four months. Increasing sales in growth markets like Russia and China underlines Audi's strategy of realising potential in these new markets. In Russia, sales grew by 76.6% (4,409 units) in the first four months of the year. In China (including Hong Kong) Audi sales grew 23.7% y/y in the first four months to 32,961 units, while in the United States, sales during the same period were up 15.2% y/y to 29,134 units.

Earlier this week, the BMW Group has said that global sales of BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce vehicles advanced 3.0% y/y in April to 118,456 units. In the first four months, global deliveries edged up 0.8% to 451,863 units. BMW brand sales inched up 0.5% to 100,141 units as new models and revised versions of the 1-Series and 5-Series are just beginning to make their mark on the marketplace. Sales at Mini received a welcome boost from the arrival of the new generation version, which is now available in most markets, and advanced 19.2% y/y to 18,263 units. This helped to stabilise cumulative sales, which increase 0.6% y/y to 65,245 units. For its part, The Mercedes Car Group delivered 97,800 Mercedes-Benz, Maybach and Smart vehicles worldwide in April, which corresponds to a 3.0% y/y decrease. In the first four months of 2007, the Mercedes Car Group global sales declined 2.8% y/y to 384,600 units. Sales of Mercedes-branded vehicles dropped 0.7% y/y to 90,600 units in April but year-to-date sales figures of the premium brands were still up 2.2% y/y at 365,000 units. On the other hand, sales of Smart fell 24.6%

Vulcan, not only did I "pass math", but I even passed courses like "Advanced Statistics", "Economics" (Macro and Micro), and "Finance" while in business school. You know, since they didn't offer just plain "math" there I had to take those instead. Perhaps if you took a class above "math" you'd understand that everything you just said is BS, incorrect, irrelevant, or some combination thereof. I also recall something a professor told me when we discussed debating: when your adversary has to demean himself by insulting you to make their point, you've won.

Guess I won.

Incidentally, I was very clear in my post that I was talking about the U.S., since the figures in this thread are from the U.S. I am well aware there's more world out there, I've been to a lot of it. This thread was about the U.S. I also didn't call anyone who bought ANY type of car a name just because of what they bought. I was talking about numbers, and numbers are numbers. In this case, when talking about these numbers, in the U.S., you are wrong. Period. Based on these growth figures here in the U.S. Audi WOULD NEVER catch up to BMW. Ever. Why? Because 12.6% of a big number is more than 15.4% of a small one. To keep pace with BMW's growth this month, Audi would have had to increase sales over 40%. End of discussion. You can throw out all the global stats you want to, this was only about the U.S. You want to make it global? Fine, start your own thread.

So, enjoy hanging out with all your "smart people in the minority", as the minority gets more and more "minor" here in the U.S. And again, before you run around making Audi people look bad by insluting people on here who actually know what they are saying, you might want to brush up on that "math" stuff. It's not that hard.

Wow. Audi just keeps getting closer and closer to Mercedes. An interesting note is how the BMW GROUP and Merc GROUP sales are the headliners, as opposed to just the Audi BRAND. Why don't they include Lamborghini and SEAT?

Wow Rob, you impress me (NOT). You actually defended your argument by restating it again! What school did you say you went to again?

Did you feel offended by my language or really more by my facts. Yes, I agree that your comments reflected the US Sales number, but you blindly attack Audi and say that it will never catch up to BMW sales in the US. You see Rob, last I checked the statements by Audi were that Audi would pass BMW GLOBAL sales by 2015, not US! thus your comments about US sales are IRRELEVANT.

And no, I am not wrong in my math, not wrong in my assumptions, and not wrong in my reasoning. I however cannot control the future and anything can happen to derail Audis goals for the future. I believe based on their present sales trends, financial backing of their parent company, and incredible ongoing success in motorsports that they are very well capable of achieving their goal. Simple. No BS like you would want.

I know a thing or two about math, economics and finance given my number of degrees which I will not debate in this forum like a teenager daring me to cross the line. If anything my math and analytical skills alone are more than enough to prove you wrong. If you think the contrary then prove my math wrong.

As far as you "winning" the argument (what a childish conclusion), I didn't know this was a competition to see who "wins". If you want a medal for first place you can have it! (Please let me know what school you went to so I don't recommend it to anyone).

As an active member of this 'everybody' group, I have to say that you're way off base!

Performance-wise, the 3'er is certainly very accomplished, but the looks are as derivative (especially of Japanese design) and over-wrought as anything ever to come out of Germany.

Hopefully BMW will return to from follows function very soon, because this turn towards superfluous fashion designs is quite tiring.

daharder .. just because everybody isnt you. The BMW 3-series, like it or not, is the benchmark for performance sedans. BMW sells more 3-series than almost all of our competitors combined ... combine A4, C300/C350, IS250/350 then you will come to the amount of 3-series sold in the US and abroad...

You're an idiot. Although the 3 (especially the coupe) is very good looking, people choose it for it's superior engineering and performance abilities, another important factor is the prestige of the BMW badge.

The 3 isn't selling just because of the way it looks. Nobody is stupid enough to make looks alone the deciding factor in a car purchase. Except for women.

envy..looks like the other audiphiles on this site, you have not graduated from a decent college. See where audi is and plot out what 15% vs. 12.6% compounded growth and see where the curves meet up. then retard audi's growth in later years due to their market saturation and increasing models which they wont have forever. then plot BMWs incremental growth with segment usters such as the X6 and a new 7 around the corner. Then add a 1 series which blows away all competition in the segment to the point that no A3s and most A4s will be shitty in comparison. No see the 2 lines divering with BMW running away and Audi being merged with Porsche. enjoy your FWD.

ok, well. Except that BMW is not growing 12.6% year after year, BMW's YTD in sales grew only 8.1%. Audi sales are typically substantially higher in November (50% higher than a typical month) and December (100% higher than typical). So, a conservative projection to December is about 13% growth for 2007.

Like I said to Robby, Audi's claims are Global. But for sake of argument in the US it would take Audi (at these assumed rates) 18 years to catch up to BMW in sales.

Of course, the 25 year projection is unrealistic since it is not very likely that all brands will have constant increase in sales forever. Some studies do show an increase in luxury sales and increase in luxury market share compared to all vehicle sales so there is some room for growth. I would have to argue that Audi needs not only to increase number of models for sale, but sell more of each model. Audi would have to attract new customers and competing brand customers (thus increasing sales while the competition decreases sales increase rate). If that is the case, assuming BMW decreases from 8% Yr/Yr to 6% and Audi increases to 15% Yr/Yr (which is currently very doable and even possible this year) Audi would surpass BMW by 2017 IN THE US. Of course this is just an exercise, not even a prediction (at this time).

US Sales only.

you started out wrong, a "see where" is not current with "what is" and that is the growth margin of sales and profit figures for a company. economic and company success are not based on future "growth" if the numbers aren't adding up in the first place, and it's clear they are for audi, when they have just as many model lineups as bmw and more with the Audi R8...

... yet another narrow minded "less gifted" comment. The universe does not end at the East or West coasts. Audi's claim is a GLOBAL one not a US claim. Your numbers may or may not be right (I'll assume they are for argument sake for the US), but they don't mean anything if Audi is increasing sales faster than BMW. Again, the claim is that Audi will surpass BMW and MB in GLOBAL sales in 2015.

You and Rob should save some needed money and take a discount on a math class.

They all make very good cars, thats what matter.
BMW have a period trying new designs, i own a e46 and i would not buy the e90 it does not look good, only the coupe looks very good. No company can hit it right every time.

J rob, this isnt a college debate class, a little slip in average was overlooked. what is and cannot be debated is that the sales increment in percent and not Gross product is higher than that of bmw's this month.

If you look at the market you'll see that their is a record number of sales in The major cities of the US. Therefore It is clear that the new lineup Models(not defined by engine variants) are making a popular and well established edition to the Audi CO. Numbers are not the only important figures in a companies success thats like saying the mass number of fords and gm's produced here out-brand BMW or Merc or Audi because of sales[(making them the better company because of GDP and YTD %)?] Popularity increases in the car market for innovative designs and mass production impressive inside and out cars, Audi has good future prospects in terms of quality and vision, The audi R8 is an example of that innovativeness, and brand stature.

As much as audi probably wouldn't mind being at the top of the chain, with car's like the R8 under their belt i dont think it matters right now compared with bmw, who still doesn't have a supercar under theirs.
