I am amazed month after month how well the 3 series continues to sell. There are so many other options out there. Consumers really dont care what their cars look like as long as there is a blue and white propellor on the hood. This is pure marketing genius. These things are everywhere in LA. People who know nothing about cars, who have never even had to sit through conversations about soul and magic feel, will put the Bimmer on the top of their lists. And BMW makes it so easy to get into one. It becomes self perpetuating, because fortunately for BMW they have not (yet) sold in Camry-like numbers. So a cache still exists. But there are enough running around the streets to never let consumers forget them. BMW is always on your mind. If you have a decent wage and you're ready to step up, you think I can afford a little luxury instead of a basic midsizer or SUV. Your well conditioned mind automatically thinks BMW. And BMW makes sure you can afford to lease the overpriced 3 series. Done deal. I'm way overthinking this, but someone really needs to study this.

I drove the new 3, I like it.
That being said I think that you think everyone is you. Not everyone thinks it's ugly, and maybe some of the people who do, might like it for other reasons. I know you can't think of a reason, but it might have something to do with history. When other car companies were making FWD boats BMW stuck to there guns. Maybe the cars that the current BMW buyers lusted after as teens were cars like the E30 M3, and the e36 M3. BMW is not just jumping into the 3 series , its been around, and selling well with basic principles since before the competition(rwd, safe, refined, drivers car). They basically defined the market. So if you are looking for reasons, and if you can't seem to find them, look to the history.
Then again what do I know.

it's called good product. bmw has a good amount of well-done advertising, but it spends far less than some other brands.
make a product that's handsome, fun to drive and distinctive and...voila....people buy it in droves.

will this be the year that BMW overtakes Lexus as number 1 overall in sales in the US? With the new X5, just starting to go into full production and the introduction of the 335xi, 335 conv and 328 conv, I predict that by the end of 2007 BMW will be king in the US> BMW has been #1 in passenger car sales in the US since 2002, but never in total luxury vehicles. This is due to Lexus's RX model line which accounts for 40% of their sales in the US>

why are people deboosting this comment? it's all fact, not opinion.
bmw does outsell others in cars. and lexus is the top selling luxury brand only because it sell over 100K RXs.

BMW4ever,
Kind of like how the 3 series is over 50% of BMW's sales? Even with BMW offering less expensive cars, I wouldn't hold your breath.
SC sales nearly matched 6 series sales. Interesting.

well consdering an SC is $20k less expensive and Lexus is offering super subsidized leases for 1/2 the cost of BMW's completely unincentivized 650i lease, that's not really all that interesting. The fact that BMW sold more 6's for $1400 a month than Lexus sold SC's for $700 a month is a lot more interesting. One car needs incentives, the other doesn't.

huu ... how bout the fact that the BMW 3-series sold almost more cars in the US, than the entire lexus car line-up. Dont worry it will all change very soon. Production on the X5 will be up to 100% capacity in April production. BMW will be number 1 in overall sales ... Lexus only beat BMW by 300 cars this month ...

yes, the 3 series is the heart of the BMW brand. and it's a great car that's a blast to drive. no shame in that.
just like the RX is the heart of the lexus brand. a boring but comfortable people mover that never breaks down.

As I have said before Lexus is overated BMW, Audi, Mercedes Benz these companies are the true leaders. Lexus is just a wannabe of course they have the luxury of all the cash that Toyota has to throw around to be a contender but in the end they are just taking ideas from these companies and others and sticking their name on it. They do come up with some ideas of their own but they are like that super rich person who just wants to buy there way into the group but they still do not fit in.

The more BMW sells, the cheaper their image gets (to match the quality of their cars of course). Unlike BMW, Lexus never attempted to be an exclusive brand, just the best.
The core fact is Lexus is charging more for their cars (the high volume ones) and they still outsell BMW over all. It'll be a hoot when LS sales surpass 5 series sales.
Rob,
In Canada.
BMW 6 $101,000 and SC430 $93,000
Both companies charge 7.5% financing.
Considering the SC is 7 years old and uglier, the 6 should smoke it in sales but it doesn't.
www.lexus.ca www.bmw.ca check out the facts.
Where'd you get your fairytale numbers?

huu that is in Canada only. In the US, a BMW 650 cab is about $15k more than the Lexus SC> You will also notice that is you go onto www.lexususa.com that they are considerably less expensive than there BMW counterparts. Yet in passenger cars, BMW outsells them 2 to 1. psst. just cause you live in Canada and it is cold up there dont let your brain freeze. Canada is not the only market.

well you got one thing right. the LS is more in the 5-series class than comparable to a 7.

Terminal.. actually the brand that is hugely overrated is Audi. At least lexus does not position itself (laughingly so) as a viable alternative to the blue and white. But then again, audi is significantly cheaper than MB/BMW, so maybe they have slotted correctly in the market.

Give me ten reasons why I should trade my S4 in for an M3, and I'll be sold.
Give me five more reasons why Audi isn't a "viable alternative" to BMW.

BMW4,
Lexus outsells BMW by nearly the same margin on trucks. What's your point?
The X3 is cheap compared to the RX $45/51K vs $51/62K. The GX held its own vs the X5.
We know, BMW is a car company, that's why they've decided to enter the truck, min-van and economy markets.
Enthusiast,
The 5 wishes it were in the same class as the LS. Unfortunately for the 5, BMW made it look like a shoe-horn.
AmazingBimmer,
Since when do you drive a Lexus?

LOL nice reply to AmazingBimmer. That's the only time I'd agree with you- when you're bashing AB. I just can't really understand why he never shuts up about how "cheap" Audis are. SO cheap. A massive $1,000 less than that M3 I could've gotten. Did he get raped inside one or something?
