Chrysler to launch engine stop-start tech
Chrysler has promised to follow the lead of carmakers like BMW by offering fuel-saving engine stop-start technologies on some of its cars in the near future. The system, which shuts down the engine while the car is stationary in traffic, then starts it again once the driver releases the clutch or brake pedal, can improve fuel economy by up to 5%.

Chrysler product development chief Frank Klegon said the new “micro hybrids will be introduced pretty soon” but wasn’t willing to reveal when exactly. Klegon also revealed that the system would only cost several hundred dollars per vehicle.

I don't get it. Without extra electric engine. What happen when you're in a traffic jam in a 100 degree weather and the engine stop. What's pumping out the AC?

I don't think BMW has that technology here in the US. BMW has the Energy EfficientDynamics in Europe, but, for some unknown reasons, BMW decided not to include it in the US 1 and 3 series.

did we ask if BMW did? get over the infatuation with the brand...

this is reminding me of the youtube TL that used pure acetone to achieve better mpg. he said turning off the car at long stop lights were efficient, chrysler i guess backs his theory

Usually, the cars with Start/Stop systems have an uprated battery(s) and a heavy duty or intergral starter/generator. Electric power steering and electricly driven a/c compressors.
The engines are restarted in less time than it takes for you to move your foot to the gas pedal. Also, the car does not emit any pollution when the engine is shut off.
FYI-VW has been experimenting with this tech since the late 70's.
