How can this possibly be bad news. Cars have had gas guzzler tax for years? The gas guzlling SUVs and pickups should not be excluded.

It is bad news because SUV's are the Domestics bread and butter. This is still quite true even though there is a decline in demand. This will hurt the domestics further. Even though I am not a fan of the domestics I don't want to see their demise.

People,

Please! Casual statements from domestic car brand haters and SUV haters like "oh well, there goes America's car industry", or "tell Ford to close the factory now", should be careful what they wish for. The entire US economy would probably crumble if that actually happend. Yes, I do agree that domestic brands could have a terminal disease in the works, but if it actually comes down to losing one or more of the big US brands completely, you will not like the aftermath of such an occurance. The stock market goes bisurk enough when we drop a bomb in the wrong place, can you imagine how many banks, shareholders, investment firms, auto parts suppliers, and ultimately, the employees (active and retired) of these once fine companies who would be taken down by such an event? You think the world freeked during the Enron debacle? Try something along the scale of GM or Ford or worse yet, both! I don't ever want to witness such an event in my lifetime. Think you won't be affected? Think again! Bad product takes 7-8 years to correct. The clock is running! The Chinese are coming and Toyota is about to take over the world in a year or two. There is about to be cheap realestate and labor available in all of the major car producing cities. 7-8 years is all the time they have to fix the US auto industry. Oddly enough, DCX looks to be the best bet to survive this time around, but even they could go under if the parts suppliers die. That industry is barely surviving as it is. Think the value of your own home won't be affected by an economic disaster like this? Most of America's wealth is tied up in thier homes and other realestate. Another big portion in tied up in 401K investment portfolios. They are all in jeopardy folks, so be carful what you wish for!

In someway, this bill will eventually force all the big SUV makers to develop new engine that will have a better gas consumption. Honestly, I can almost sense the laziness of those Detroit’s big three for lack of improvement in developing new, better gas consumption, environmentally friendly engine. No one would argue their capabilities to develop this kind of engine. Of all the very few countries that can develop high-tech things, we are surely one of them.

I don't see how this is good news. Just more costs for the consumer. Yeah, the cars and SUV/trucks are placed on equal ground but there's no benefit for the consumer.

Based on the EPA's purpose of the gas guzzler tax, this bill would probably be considered overly broad. Efficiency includes more than miles per gallon.

The customer has a choice. Buy a fuell efficient vehicle and pay no GG Tax or buy an inneficient vehicle and Pay Up.

As much as I think there should be the same tax on SUV/Truck...I see this bill has highly unlikely to go anywhere. Markey is a far left Dem from Mass. See how far that gets in this current environment.
