Now some of you may accuse me of overexaggeration when I say the Porsche 918 is a "gem," but I actually do have a point. That's because it was painted a lovely pearl white at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS).

And, if you didn't know, pearl is a gem. So there!

Although folks may head to the auto show and RUN to the Porsche stand to go see the all-new 911 Targa, or scope out the all-new Macan, there was one special surprise tucked away in a glass-walled room about the size of a conference room. It's the 918 Spyder.

You know, the car that went out the Nürburgring and set a record pace for a production vehicle. You know, the same vehicle that's going to war with the likes of the McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari.

The 918 is a representation of what exactly Porsche is capable of — it's an engineering masterpiece.

So to finally see it in the flesh in production form and NOT in silver was a real treat. Check it out below.
