Volkswagen started work on its XL1 a long time ago. But though it seems like eons now, the time has finally come for it to hit production and land in consumers' hands. Boasting the title of the world's most efficient production car — it obtains 313 mpg (not sure if this is the US or UK cycle) — it is, once again, one of Volkswagen's ultimate products.

Like the Phaeton, the XL1 will go down in history.

Of course its price is staggering at about 100,000 GBP, but you have to consider that this is one of Volkswagen Group's pieces of forward-thinking engineering. Think of it like the Bugatti Veyron, except it's the polar opposite.

Though this may surprise you, I would actually love to get behind the wheel of one. The reason? This may just be a look into the future of automobiles.
