Even on Election Day, the auto industry was the subject of an urban legend generated from inside the Beltway, this time from the insiderish confines of Politico.com.

The confusion began when Ralph Gilles, Chrysler's vice president of design, tweeted: "Chrysler gave its entire work force the day off to Vote Today! Let's go! #America."

That prompted a story by Politico, the all-politics-all-the-time Washington-based website, which played a story prominently Tuesday on its site about Chrysler's UAW workers.

The original story gave the impression that this is something new. It also pointed out that the UAW supports U.S. President Barack Obama and union members mostly vote for Democrats.
