Though many may mistake this as the world's first diesel-hybrid sport-utility vehicle, in reality it isn't. 'Fraid so, friends. Volvo beat Volkswagen to the punch; however, that doesn't mean that the Cross Coupe isn't at bare minimum way better looking, in my humble opinion.

While the Volvo XC60 is handsome product, the VW Cross Coupe just exudes masculinity and boasts a face as stern as Robert DeNiro doing his best rendition of "You talkin' to me?" from Taxi Driver.

Moving past looks, this is what we know from VW's equally stern press release that essentially tells us only what we need to know. I guess.

The Cross Coupe is powered by a TDI diesel powerplant that is backed by two electric motors. Horsepower is over the 300 mark.

Volkswagen's press release follows:

Cross Coupé from Volkswagen consumes just 1.8 l/100 km

Wolfsburg, 04 March 2012 - The Cross Coupé Concept is powered by an alliance of a turbodiesel direct-injection engine (TDI) and two electric motors. Its combined fuel consumption in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) is a sensationally low of 1.8 l/100 km. This is equivalent to CO2 emissions of just 46 g/km. Noteworthy here is the fact that the Cross Coupé is a powerful SUV with a top speed of 220 km/h, 225 kW / 306 PS of power (system power) and a kerb weight of 1,858 kg. Volkswagen is presenting the concept with a TDI plug-in hybrid in a world premiere at the Geneva International Motor Show (08 to 18 March 2012).
