The court in Germany which last month took $100 million from Formula One’s chief executive Bernie Ecclestone to settle bribery charges has revealed that it could not have even forced him to stand trial.

It raises the question of whether the court should have demanded that he pay the money to settle especially since it concluded it is “not probable” that he is guilty.

They are some of the many surprising claims contained in the summary of the settlement decision which was read out in court last month but has not been reported in full until now.
