Given the nature of our business, we have some friends at car dealerships. Once and a while I just have to ask: “How are your test drives?”

Typically, the answer is “not that bad,” however, once and a while I get a bit of a devilish grin, a chuckle and a story. Some people love to throttle the cars or test the brakes, which is actually a stupid thing to do on a test drive, or just make the sales person’s life hell.

But it seems as though one driver really outdid herself. Last Friday, an Arlington-based Mercedes-Benz dealer had a customer make a mistake that cost them several of their own autos in their respective inventory.

Apparently the driver may have mistaken the gas pedal for the brake and the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class went zooming off. In the mayhem the GLE filled with four passengers wound up on its side. According to first responders, there were no serious injuries to any of the passengers except some damaged pride. To add insult to injury, the driver also damaged her own vehicle.

Talk about batting a thousand.
