Going hybrid is a very smart business decision by Mercedes.

It will be a prototype DIESEL-hybrid.

Yearh cutie... Just like Lexus have been copying the germans since 1989... Please just stop that biased BS...

They did... this is probably a semi-old release.

BOO HYBRIDS! Mercedes needs to keep it Bluetec!

S4, Are you serious?! This is the way to go, because unlike gasoline engines, diesels are the perfect partner for a hybrid system! Because of the torque, the added weight won't have the same problem with the added weight in pure ICE mode...

This is the way to go... This will probably give the Mercedes completely unrivaled fuel economy... But please use it for that Mercedes, fuel economy, not silly "performance" cars... An E270CDI with hybrid drive would offer an unrivaled fuel mileage and still offer good performance (yes yes, I know, cheapo euro crap box, whatever!). Then offer the full option package and you'll have a definate winner... Then add BlueTec and a highly efficient PM filter, and then even California will have to surrender!

Diesels is to surrender to gas hybrids, even Daimler knows that. BTW, Toyota has been selling diesel hybrid trucks for several years. Plug-in hybrid is the future.

Yeah... You mean those engines with the electric fly wheel? We've been over this before, and a car engine compares just as well to a truck engine (like those in Hinos) as they do to ship engines... Which doesn't compare very well. Truck "technology" is not easily applied to cars... Especially not this technology. It is basically the same technic we've been using in ships for decades... And that definately doesn't apply to cars.

And do you have any proof to support that silly claim, you know that "diesels is to surrender to gas hybrids"... Because frankly, with diesel hybrids (real car engines) just around the corner that seems like the most stupid comment I've heard in a long time about diesels... And i've heard a few... Get over your bias!

Supra, you really don't make much sense. You want a fun to drive car right? That's why you keep boosting the IS-F anyway. If we have plug in cars they'll be slow...not to mention there really aren't many good ways to recharge them. If you go roadtripping with one, it'll have a range of maybe 250 miles..and then you'll have to make an hour pit stop. It really is not the way to go.

Can't wait to see how they did on this new system. I've been proclaiming diesel hybrids for quite some time now. Let's see, 35 mpg hwy with the E320 Bluetec...don't see why 50-60 mpg is out of the question. Please don't compare those numbers to the Prius...faster, bigger, more luxurious, etc.

Anybody look into hydraulic drivetrains? Interesting concept that requires less than a 60hp engine to have the same performance of something like the Jetta. Imagine the possibilities...60hp engines could probably get into the hundreds of mpg with a diesel hybrid.

Hydraulic powertrains? Interesting... We use hydraulic motors and systems for all kind of things on ships... And as long as they are completely dirt free and have no leaks, they work perfectly, but you don't want to experience a failure of the system while driving! I once experienced a blow out on a 400 bar hydraulic line while handling mooring lines... And it wasn't pretty... a 700 sq.m. fore castle was completely covered in very slippery hydraulic oil (75 liters go a LOOOOONG way). Just imagine if that happened to your car while doing 70 mph on a highway. Or if another car had a pipe blow out on the highway and you then drove over that very slippery oil! If you could make the system fool and tamper proof, it would be great, but unfortunately, there is always some moron who think he can do something better than the manufacturer which ALWAYS ends up with something bad happening!

D'oh... Didn't see that... A bus doesn't mean sh*t... That isn't any more useful than the drivetrain in those Hino trucks... I guess we'll just have to wait for Peugeot to reveal their system next year!

It's a bus. But good for MB for finally seeing the light.

I'd hate to see what sort of price they plan on charging if it ever makes it into a car.

Probably won't matter, hydrogen hopefully will be just coming out to the public by then.

UMm... In case someone failed to mention it, a diesel-hybrid has yet to be proven to be anymore cost effective than gasoline AND hybrid vehicles.

For me, that's not really the point. We really need to reduce consumption, which is what I think this combination would do best when paired with "standard" vehicle technology (ie. without totally changing the vehicle, see previous post above).

But ya, def wish it wasn't a bus.

Ohh come on... That is just the lamest I've ever heard... There is no way it won't be more effective. I'm not even going to explain the two kazillion reasons why it will be more efficient to you because they are so obvious that anybody past second grade will be able to figure it out... And diesel hybrids have proven to be more effective than pure diesel drive in every single application where they've been used... Trains, trucks, ships etc. Diesels are already as efficient as any comparable hybrid, so any increase in efficiency will be a step in the right direction!

Wow, one should hope so.

All companies will probably go hybrid eventually, Lexus fanboys who say Mercedes are cpying, please shut up. Over time, we all know Mercedes have designed and implemented almost everything for cars. And Lexus' special sale point - it's hybrid!!! will now be gone, so Mercdes will remain king.

Nobody trusts the reliability of MB's electronics, forget about it's hybrid system.
