Lexus has a real shot this year at taking back the U.S. luxury-auto sales title that it gave up in 2011, and the October sales numbers are likely to show it continuing to close in on BMW and Mercedes-Benz for the 2015 crown.

Mostly because of hot sales of its new NX 200t compact crossover, for the year to date through September Lexus trailed each of the German leaders by only about 2,500 vehicles, with more than 247,000 Lexus sales. BMW brand sales were 249,956 for the first nine months of the year, while the Mercedes-Benz brand was right there with 249,890 units.
