I have to admit that I am a sucker for certain special edition vehicles. Anything having to do with racing heritage or special little details not available on other standard issue models get me all sorts of excited.

Yes, I am a car geek.

McLaren has gotten my juices flowing thanks to the announcement of an all-new 650S-based Le Mans special edition. Inspired by the F1 GTR car that won Le Mans in a spectacular fashion in 1995, this 650S boasts some reminders of that vehicle. Take, for example, the roof-mounted air intake that snorkels air into the mid-engined Macca. Although it is said not to increase performance or output, we've been told it adds some lovely sounds to the cockpit. Then there are the louvers over the front fenders, gunmetal five-spoke lightweight wheels and other little carbon fiber additions to the body.

Painted in Sarthe Grey, only 50 units of this special edition are to be built by McLaren Special Operations (MSO).

McLaren is well known for taking great pride in its race victories, so it's no surprise that the company has announced a limited-numbers special edition of its 650S supercar to celebrate its famous Le Mans 24 Hours win. Badged 'Le Mans', the 650S special is built to commemorate the British firm's dominance in the 1995 endurance race, in which its McLaren F1 GTR race cars finished first, third, fourth and fifth. 

Only 50 examples of the McLaren 650S Le Mans special edition will be made and all will be coupes. Priced at £244,500, the cars are available to order now with deliveries commencing in the middle of the year.
