It’s very important for an engineer to understand these issues and focus his or her efforts to where the customer sees and feels the car. Therefore the engineer is always looking for logic – even in styling issues. And of course there is an easy and logical approach on how to disclose an object or a person. There are several steps when you approach anything or anybody from a distance. First you see the outline, then the silhouette and lastly, the proportions. As you get closer, one can see the light-to-dark transitions, the color and with the outline defined, a 3-dimensional picture of the object evolves. You have to be able to paint shadows to create a painting with depth in the third dimension. It is only when you are very close that you see the face and details.

The sportiness of a BMW is therefore based on these proportions:

• Short overhangs, front and rear

• Long wheelbase

• Large hood

• Set-back greeenhouse

• Elegant roof line.

Agent 001 - Thank you for the ASSUME Photo Gallery. You are on a roll. You left me speechless with X5 and 328 photo Gallery and now this. Keep up the great work!!!!

I'm with BavarianMotorrad snap a photo with 19' wheels. The 335i sleek roof line and large hood looks handsome. And the wide wheel base is leaving me speechless.

Clean and beautiful.
The least affected by the "bangle design" theme and so much the better for it.
It also appears that the next generation 5 series will be moving back towards the pre-bangle design theme as reported by the Sep. Automobile magazine and the picture of the car therein of the next 5 is very handsome as well.
Well done BMW and stay the course with your designs.

logical,
I beg to disagree. I think, and the majority of the auto enthusiasts of the world agree, that Bangle has harmed BMW design and therefore the sales to a very great extent. Especially the 7 series.

I believe that he pushed the design on a car company that already had some of the most stunning cars and then proceeded to destroy every single version. The 7, the first to receive his treatment was the worst received, the 5th was slightly better and it appears now that with the 3rd, BMW have decided to do the right thing, which is what they had been doing all along before the bange disaster. I have never had a problem with BMW design until the bangle versions appeared. Imagine what the elegant 7 would have looked like had BMW continued to improve on that streamlined shape instead of the walrus that took its place.....

Is it only me- the last generation coupe was more attractive. The current one seems more bland- is this done for a reason? As much as I love BMW and hate Lexus, I think the IS clearly has a more terrific design (especially the fantastic, jaw dropping rear end).

In the end, I will still end up buying the fantastic performing Bimmer albiet with a small grudge.

Dear 001:
Nice work again. I do have a couple of questions. 1. When is the convertible version coming out you think? 2. I had 325i sedan w/ sport pack and then it was just not drivable in snow. I am too lazy to change the tires to winter tires. And I am wondering whether all season tires are available w/ 335 twin turbos and whether that would be enough for winter... Is sport pack w/ all season tires decent for winter? Also, what do you think is the best exterior color for 335?

Rupert- thanks. I think the Dark Metallic Grey looks so beautiful. The silver looks somewhat bland.. Definitely the dakota red interior! To me the color is such an important aspect for bimmers. They make a huge aesthetic difference.

would look even nicer without those b-pillars. gimme a 6! 3 sounds too *itchy. should've gone with the 4 moniker bangle my boy! this design shouldve been out to compete with the clk's design. when the next g and clk arrive.....can someone say e46 all over again!

intelli,
grey with red interior.....the best ever.
along with blue with cream, though that's more for a luxury car.

The 3-series coupe is nice, without a doubt, but it is not remarkable in a styling sense. The current 3 gives one the impression that this is how BMW's cars would have looked if BMW had hired Japanese designers. Good thing it drives like a BMW!

There is nothing better than a BMW, if i had the money i would buy all the lines. Nothing drives better, how can you stop them.
The new 335i pick up from the old and made it better, beautiful car, loving it.

More pics of the gadgets and engine would be nice. Espeically for us gear heads. I can only look at different angles of the same exterior so much.

looks very nice... except from the trunklid! where is the traditional beamer humplid?!? too thin in back now.

the hump is like one of the benchmark styling cues!!

beamer seems to always nearly make a perfect style except for one or two faults, like the front bumper on previous generations... and possibly the new m3 front bumper, hopefully not though.
