Chris Evans has stepped down as the host of Top Gear, after his revamped motoring show was branded a failure and amidst a police probe into claims that the presenter sexually assaulted a former colleague.

On the morning after the final episode of Evans’s stint on Top Gear recorded the lowest audience figures since the show was revived by Jeremy Clarkson, in 2002, the presenter announced that he had given it “my best shot, but sometimes that’s not enough”.

Evans added: “I feel like my standing aside is the single best thing I can now do to help the cause.”
