Poll: The New BMW M3 Concept Design...STUD or DUD?
Picking the car at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show that generated the most buzz was not very hard this year. By most accounts, the new BMW M3 concept stole the show, even with no known specs about its engine and power ratings. In previous years, BMW would have had the run of the roost in this segment. But this time, a legitimate contender is being prepared for the ULTIMATE showdown...The Lexus IS-F. So the big question from the show floor is...

I say the M3 Concept due to the fact you actually have tangible details. Not just generalities or possibilities.

I just wish they redesign the front bumper a bit. I don't like how it curves up and in like a fat lip. e46 m3 design was much better.

E92 M3 is a stud.

...but then again put a V8 producing somewhere around 426bhp with huge rims, a quad exhaust system and a bump in the hood in any car and you've got a "stud".

leftlanenews estimate it to be as much as 450 hp.

Whatever it is 420 - 450 hp...it's still MMMMMMMMMM so good.

Especially since the car will only weigh around 3500 lbs.

Don't you just wish they had raised up the whole hood for the engine? That way, that Subaru Impreza bump wouldn't be messing up the look of the front. And why did they still use the old quad exhaust look so common and ordinary in this segment? Bumper-integrated stacked exhaust would have been refreshing and cool. And what's up with the interior???

;)

anything compared to the IS-F is a stud, that thing is ugly. I do like the M3 concept, but would still take the RS4 over it, but then again I dont know all the numbers on the M3, but i do prefer the looks of the RS4 better. Its gonna take alot for the M3 to out perform the RS4, but we will have to wait and see the numbers

It is a stud, Although the E92 M3 coupe/335 coupe don't look as aggressive as the E46 M3 due to the fact that the E92 wheelbase is longer, making it look awkward, and the E46 had that hunkered down look due to its short wheelbase.

The new M3 is a beautifully done car. To me its not too over-the-top like most car brands performance versions. Oh, and BTW, I saw the IS-F up close and personal here at the Chicago Auto Show. Well, if you want to blend in with every other "ricer" on the road, then yeah, its a nice car. In all honesty, I do like the backside, however, the front air dam, side skirts, and bulging hood are terrible. You may as well be driving a Pontiac GTO! I really hope the production version is refined more than this "thrown together" look. I mean come on...just look at those BBS wheels, where is the originality?!? If the S5 is any indication of what the RS5 will look like, I'll be going for that, unless BMW gets their heads out of their asses. Last Generation M3 was waaaaaaaay better looking!!

But the last generation M3 is under powered compared to everything else out there in its class. And I own a very fast 2002 M3 convertible that got smoked by a Pontiac GTO the other night on the Cross Island Pkwy in NYC.

As for the wheels, those are not BBS though they do look like them. They are from the competition package on the E46 M3. And I agree, the new M3 could do with better looking wheels.

Nonetheless, I can afford a the M3 (and aftermarket wheels if necessary) and will get one. This M3 concept is everything a car enthusiast could ever wish for!!

Can't wait for the specs!!!

considering the e46 wheels, and ugly hood, do you think bmw has a few changes in store before this hits the streets?

some of the newer bmw wheels are the best i've ever seen...on any car. they make aftermarket wheels look like trash.

perhaps a more subtle hood, and more modern wheels will accompany the real thing.

Basing my opinion on styling (nothing else to base it on at this point) DUD. I already didn't like the 3 coupe to begin with. (awkward head- and tail-lights, looks heavy, etc...) With this, all the lines of the car gather at the front and go down in a V-shape yet BMW has decided to attach a soggy-looking bumper that goes up instead of down (upside down V). Add to that the power bulge on the hood that clashes with the car's 'flame' surfacing. Based on design, if someone gave this to me I'd sell it.

My ex girlfriend had a 2004 M3 and it was one of the best cars I have ever driven, well balanced styling, decent interior, and fun as hell to drive! I just feel like the front end of this version looks like it was sort of thrown together at the last minute. There is no doubt in my mind that it will be the best sports coupe for the money on the road when it is released. However, I prefer my cars to have a slightly more un-assuming class to them, plusI live in a ski resort, and 400+ horsepower to the rear wheels only, just won't work for half of the year. For both these reasons, I am leaning towards the S5 or RS5 if it ever gets released. This could change however if they intigrate that hood bump/vents, front spoiler and side skirts better into the car. And I hope like hell they do something with the wheels!

drivefast ... why not get the 335xi coupe, then? It will be quicker than the S5 and you get AWD. Anyway you look at it though, if you get a sports car and whether or not it has AWD doesnt really change the fact that more than likely you will have to get snow tires. Especially, if you get one with the Sport Package. Tires have a much bigger inpact in driving in winter conditions than whether you have AWD or 4wd.

bmw- Snow tires are very important, but an AWD car with performance tires are still 100x better in the snow then a RWD car with the best snow tires.Espcially with that much power

also how do you know the 335xi will be quicker then the S5, both aren't even out yet. I know it will give it better traction but it will add about 300lbs to the 335i, And we dont have any "real" numbers on the S5.

It's actually rather tame/plane looking in the sense it doesn't really stand out even among it's siblings. Rather vanilla, like how Japanese cars are usually described.

weaponX,

Right on!

The new M3 looks sensational! Remember, BMW's designers didn't start designing the M3's styling revisions to look like the old M3, they designed them to suit the nature and direction of the new 3-series coupe, and they have done a great job.

I think in the light of day, that hood bump will barely barely noticable, and the wheels are Concept-car spec...

Some people must also remember that the E46 had a hood bulge. It wasn't quite as prominent, but what do you expect when you shoehorn a 4.0L V8 in there instead of a 3.2L inline six?

rymert19rymert19 - 3/7/2007 10:37:10 PM
+1 BoostDrop the Boost Up the Boost
On paper, the new M3 sounds amazing. A naturally-aspirated V8 in the 4 liter range, putting out horses in the 400's, as for me, engines don't get any better than that.

It looks good as well. It has all the beefy accents that an "M" bimmer should have, but this generation they've taken it even further. A carbon fiber roof is something we would usually have likened exclusively to the M3 CSL, but not anymore. And I can't begin to express how happy I am that they have the CSL wheels on this concept, it looks great.

What I find most interesting though, is how many brands are gunning for this niche that BMW has dominated for so long. Look at what the new M3 is up against: Lexus IS-F, Audi RS4 (Even though its a 4door), Audi S5... Maybe this is why BMW has been taking their sweet time in developing the new M3... Either way, I love what the car market is doing right now.

I'm sorry but I have to say this. I'm not feeling the power bulge on the hood, the sideview mirrors and the wheels. I'm a big BMW fan, I drive a BMW. If BMW did subtle changes to the 5 in order to make the M5 exterior wise. They should stick that same idea to this M3.

Lose the power bulge or at least make it less prominent and remove the top hinge from the sideview mirrors, and the wheels stay as a concept and I'm sure it would still be a beauty and distinguishable as an M3. Just like you would be able to distinguish an M5 or an M6 compared to their lesser powered siblings.

My vote is still a STUD.

I'm an mechanic at Mercedes in München and the new C Klasse was designed for the optimum balance between sport and luxury. I've gotten to drive the car for a few minutes during a lunchbreak and I can assure all you who have doubts that this car will shock the competition. I know this because I was shocked myself. My company car is a C220 CDI W203 and the W204 C220 CDI I drove drives like a completely different car. More comfortable, the sporting qualities are amazing and very un-Mercedes like. The interior is also amazing, you need to see it in real life. The best thing about this was that this was an Elegance version I drove, so the Avantgarde model would be sportier by a large margin.

I've got nothing but praise for the car. And before I forget to mention, in real life the car looks absolutely stunning.

what are you talking about? There's no official times of any kind for the new M3, we don't even know the engine specs yet. But for what it's worth magazines have been getting 4.1 seconds 0-60 in the M5 and M6 for two years now, and I'm sure BMW was targeting the M5 considering the E46 M3 was as quick as the E39 M5. The M3 is also going to probably cost less than the RS4, and since the RS5 will probably cost more than an RS4 the new M3 will be less than that too.

It would be good to see some comparison pics of the IS-F concept and the M3 concept.

And Why is it that both these cars are called concepts, but look like the production versions? Is it because, that if they get negative responses on certain styling, that they will change it for the production model?

Stud ... The M3 is the most highly anticipated and sought after sports car on the market today. There is NOT another single car that stirs the soul of so many people. Love it or Hate it doesnt really matter. At the Geneva show it is hands down the most talked about and adored. Look at this website. There have been at least 4 to 5 articles posted about this one car, with at least 20 comments up to 80. Had Lexus brought their IS-f, no one would have given a second look. Have to give BMW their due, cause there is not another car on the planet that is more anticipated than this one. I cant wait. I am going to trade my 335 coupe in and get this car. Awesome ....

I am buying a sport sedan in the next year or so. If the M3 will come in 4 door it will be in my choices. I don't think it will be able to perform on the same plane as the 450 hp C63 or the at least 450 hp est. CTS-V. Plus those cars also have the torque to back it up.

wait.. I dont understand why your even comparing these 2 cars... anyone who wants a M3 would prob never want that IS-F thingy... M3 is HOT... IS-F ...eh NOT ....

M3- Classy.. Fast.. Pure History at its best

IS-F- wanna be EVO MR with nicer seats and Nav.. any why does it have a 8 speed Auto??

this is a stud, its really pretty. but you are underestimating the IS-F. if you think the beemer is better, lets wait until a auto magazine compares the two, and then you can say what you want to say!

I Like it!! I just dont like how all new cars leave the side panels flat, it looks bland. They should have put some McLaren F1 inspired side panel design..
