The Porsche 911 is largely understood to be an automotive icon. According to some folks, if you ask a child to draw their idea of a car, the majority of the little bundles of joy will draw the outline of a Porsche 911.

I would suspect a truck but, hey, this is what I've been told.

Porsche, which is SO steeped in tradition, is honoring 50 years of the 911 this year in a variety of ways, but arguably the biggest is the availability of a new special edition. The 911 50th Anniversary Edition will be limited to 1,963 vehicles produced, will feature a naturally aspirated flat six at the back with power sent to the two rear wheels.

Things that will make the six-figure 911 stand out are the little details like the metal grating merging the two rear taillights and also on the engine compartment grille. Inside you'll notice that the leather seats have been switched out with a new center insert in cloth that dates back to the "Pepita" tartan design from the late 1960s. Instrumentation will feature the old-school green labeling — I am not so sure anyone is really amped up about that!

It's definitely a throwback to the good 'ol days but I am left wondering if Porsche could have been a bit more creative and done something else. Realistically, if buyers wanted an old-school 911, why wouldn't they just go acquire one and fix it up properly? These cars all have a good track record and given a budget of $120,000 plus — the cost of the new special edition — I am sure Magnus Walker could do some really interesting work.

What say YOU, Spies? Would YOU get an original 911 or pony up the bucks for the new special edition?
