Contemporary sports cars are so fast that it’s difficult to wring them out on anything other than a remote mountain or desert road, and even then one must choose moments carefully. Unless the salesman and customer both have sociopathic tendencies, a test drive at the neighborhood dealership can deliver little more than a subtle whiff of capability. Much as a weekend grand touring trip remains my own default test for new cars, sports cars are most safely explored in a controlled environment.
