Porsche and Audi beef it out over the ‘RS’ badge
Following the Audi TT-S we saw at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, Audi has plans to bring even a more powerful version of the TT to the roads by 2010. And while many of us have come to known the car as the TT-RS, the badging of the car is a subject of controversy over at Volkswagen Group.

According to the April issue of AutoCar, the new powerful execs from Porsche who have a large influence in the company put a halt on the title. Porsche says that the RS badge belongs to them and only them when it comes at the end of a name.

Meaning Audi can go ahead and name as many as models as wants with the RS badge as long as they have a...

The auto industry should agree on a convention for designating sport models, extra performance sport models, SUVs with different drivetrains etc. I don't like government intervention but if the industry can't come to an agreement, the government should decide for them. Right now the consumer is totally confused about what letters like RS mean and auto industry marketing folk exaggerate and enhance the true capabilities of a vehicle by using designation letters that ignorant consumers believe mean more than they actually do.

Do you need the government to cut your steak for you too? Sorry but the government has more important things to do than mandate how manufacturers name their cars just because you think consumers are too stupid to figure it out themselves. Spend the 15 minutes on the internet and learn about the cars you're buying, that's not the government's job. You build it, you name it. You buy it, you research it. End of story.

Aren't they owned by the same company overall. So wouldn't that be like Coke suing Coke Free in those joke commercials.

Yea, well, Porsche owns roughly a quarter of VW AG, which owns 99.6% of Audi. Porsche Execs are the ones who would have the last say, especially if they are going to take a larger chunk of VW AG. They would become the majority over Saxony.

Audi will simply use R at the end of the models with no numbers on it.

And the funniest thing is, the original RS car, RS2, was developed by Porsche.
