Preliminary specifications of the Toyota 2.0L FR sports coupe, the Nissan 370Z and the Toyota 4500GTh
Thanks to DoctorNo @ vwvortex for the translations and the scans.

Toyota FR
>> Cooperating with Subaru
>> Internally known as "UPS"
>> Will use the EJ20 Boxer 4 as the engine
>> They plan on having a normal-spec as well as high-output versions of the car
>> High-output version will aim to get more then 100hp/liter; target of 220hp
>> Toyota will design the rear-differential; the Subaru rear-diff won't have the capacity to handle the higher-output engine power due to it being designed primarily for 4WD applications
>> Transmission will be a 6MT from Aisin Seiki (as found in the Mazda RX-8/MX-5)

Nissan 370Z
>> Internal code name C53D
>> dramatically different front head lights (with use of LEDs)
>> expect around 333ps
>> will use the VQ37VHR
>> designed to meet stricter emission standards
>> Steering wheel will have the "Z" emblem on it
>> expect official announcement around November 08

Toyota 4500GTh
>>Toyota planning on putting into production the FT-HS concept
>> 3.5L hybrid found in the GS450h; estimated 4.5s 0-60 times
>>Will be designed by French Studio T3 (same folks that did the iQ)
>>target weight will be 1370-1550kg; they will need to dramatically reduce the weight of the hybrid components to meet the target
>> Toyota may be looking at Li-on batteries for the production version of the car

while the artist's rendition is a tad cartoonish, the more i hear about this small, light, rwd toyota coupe, the better it sounds. it seems to have many of the sporting ambitions of the 1-series. i'm sure it will cost significantly less.

if there's one thing the automotive world lacks, it's light, rwd coupes.

I'm assuming it's not the STi's 2.5L bad boy. Well, the WRX already matches the 135i's speed, so the FR should be faster with less weight and handle better with a lower centre of gravity.

I think price will be the highlight. Less money, better performance but "poser badges sold separately".

Hey Huu, if anyone driving a fast BMW, a car that's universally considered the sport luxury benchmark, is a "poser", what does that make someone driving a fast Lexus, your prestige brand of choice? Wouldn't that make them even more of one?

So... this article is telling me they are bringing back the Trueno, and they are going through with the FT-HS.

Tell me something I don't know.

USjrob,
They're just accustomed to saying BMW is the benchmark without thinking. In reality, its a different story.
Someone who owns a fast car doesn't necessarily have a clue of how to drive one.

"But BMW also has been the make of choice for Yuppies and Wannabes, and the X5 is right up their alley."

More BMW hallmarks of pointlessness. Some benchmark.
"But what we'd like to know is how you construct a vehicle that weighs the same as a Chevy Tahoe yet can't match a Honda CR-V in terms of total cargo volume"
"Right off the bat, let's re-emphasize "ludicrous excuse for a truck...All of the vehicles included in the comparison test climbed to the summit...With two tires spinning freely, we were officially stuck."

aside from the fact that almost zero X5 owners are taking their X5's offroading, what on earth does an X5 have to do with this conversation? We're talking sports cars here. If the best you can do is whip out X5 quotes that have nothing to do with this discussion, you lose.

Listen, obviously you have some sort of inferiority complex about BMW. I don't know why, you've never explained it, and frankly I couldn't care less. Just be aware that every time you post nowaways you look more and more like the jaded, blind fanboy you're always calling everyone else who doesn't suck off the Lexus teat. You lose credibility with every post.

As for being a poser, Lexus only came out with these sporty cars to try and compete with BMW in the first place. Why do you think the IS and GS have gravitated towards the aggressive look and more sporty drive? Why do you think the IS-F exists? Because Lexus is mimicking the attributes everyone already associates with BMW. Frankly to me the idea of getting a Lexus that's trying to be the exact opposite of what a Lexus normally is, a car that's trying to be a BMW... well, now that just has poser written all over it. So you can have your fast Lexus. I'll take the car they're copying. And I'll bet at the end of the day I'll enjoy my car more than you do yours. And that, my blind, jaded, teat sucking friend, is all that matters.

Looks like an IS mated with an Acura RSX. Not a bad thing, just a comment. These cars would gladly be welcomed to the table if they can make them emotionally inviting, affordable, light and capable.

The Z is already there in it's current form, but Toyota has a hard time lately making something sexy and perform well. They are getting there with the LF-A and IS-F.

Should be a fun time for us car guys.

I, in general am a big fan of toyota and am particularly in awe of their manufacturing approach and what they did with hybrids etc.
HOWEVER, lets not talk sports cars with them!!!!!! All these so called cars from Toyota have been on the drawing board since 2000 ... The 370z , hell yea that will rock because its in Nissans DNA of producing performance cars.
Toyota does great things, but sports cars ... is a bit like asking for MB to do a pickup .. pointless.

(I do not mean to disparage cars like the Supra etc. but supra was a derivative of the Japanese concept of turbo charged sports cars ..3000Gt etc, its success is mainly due to the overengineering that went into it that allows it to be highly modified.)

Why don't you just save your money and get a bicycle with a "Lexus" emblem on it instead. Unlike the LS Hybrid it would actually be doing something to "Save the Planet."

JRrob,
Miss this did we?
"But BMW also has been the make of choice for Yuppies and Wannabes..."

BMW = hypocrite.
Luxury yet they're selling cars priced against high-end Corollas.
"If you buy the BMW brand, you'll be special, just like everyone else."
Performance yet every competitor can match them.
Heritage but companies that don't race or have less history create cars even better.
Supposedly a man's car yet its usually women who drive them (visit Shanghai and see how many men actually drive BMW's).
"Diesels are the future" as we release our own hybrid.
Everything comes back to some mythical urban legend called "handling" which the majority of their drivers wouldn't recognize if it bit them on the ass.

The previous BMW's were the same, but atleast they were good looking.

That answer your question?

Huu76. I usually reserve my comments to myself as I don't want to waste time with idiots who lack logical reasoning. I don't know why or where you get your information from but if you don't like bmw, then so be it. just shut up about it, and grow up. you work hard for your money so please go buy your lexus for less money cause you don't see value in the added cost of a bmw.

But for some reason, and you see this in lexus marketing, many reviews from third party company's and im sure its in lexus management discussion boards cause Lexus is ALWAYS compared to BMW. if there is no comparison like you claim, then why the comparison? Toyota makes mass production products, its evident in their operations. Im not saying bmw doesn't mass produce, they do, but its not in their foundation for operation. They concentrate on productin ultimate driving machines, rather then lexus "comparable luxury, similar performance, BUT FOR LESS".

I have a bmw 335i, i used to own a bmw m3 e46, and before this i had a supra and before that a celica.

I THINK, and this is my opinion through experience on and off teh track with bmw and toyotas, nothing drives like a bmw.

end of discussion.
