Although BMW tends to deliver cutting-edge technology in its cars, the Bavarian automaker wasn't first in line to do what others did when it came to properly handling the Takata air bag situation. In the past week we've seen numerous automakers decide to take the once regional situation and expand it into a nationwide recall.

BMW's last to the party.

In E46 3-Series built from 2004 to 2006, BMW will be replacing the driver's side front air bag. According to BMW this accounts for approximately 140,000 units.

Like the other automakers, BMW has also said that none of its vehicles have had improper deployments due to Takata's malfunctioning inflators.

Be safe out there, Spies!

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has urged the carmakers to broaden the recall beyond a limited area with high humidity and they have gradually followed suit.

Takata has said that extended exposure to high humidity could damage the propellant in the inflators, causing them to spray vehicle occupants with metal shrapnel when the air bags inflate.

The German luxury automaker said it told NHTSA that it will replace driver-side front air bags in about 140,000 BMW 3 Series vehicles in the U.S. from model years 2004 to 2006.
