In recent years we've seen BMW take its 3-Series convertible, soften it up a bit and add folding metal roof.

Now known as the 4-Series for nomenclature reasons that still don't exactly make sense — look at the 4-Series Gran Coupe and 2-Series mini van thing — it's still a favorite for those who like to have fun in the sun.

But purists have stuck to their guns and derided it for the vehicle's weight as well as limited storage capacity. It seems that the word may have spread up the corporate ladder because the latest rumor on the street is that the next-gen 4-Series due out around 2020 will feature a fabric roof. According to some sources "a decision has already been made." Not only will it save space, the Bavarians are said to be making a point to sport up the next-gen 4-Series.

Although details are not known at this point, some have suggested that the all-new construction technology seen in the all-new, 2016 BMW 7-Series will be trickling down to its more mainstream products. Not only would that be brilliant for fuel efficiency, we're thinking this will help make the vehicles become a bit more connected and sporting like they used to be.

As you can in our cover image, some folks have already started guessing what it will look like, but honestly, it's pure speculation at this point.
