Not too long ago at the 2015 New York Auto Show, you may recall I did a bit of rambling about the all-new Boxster Spyder. Essentially, I confessed my love for the white little spud.

What can I say? I am a sucker for sweet sounding six-cylinder motors and a simple car.

It turns out though that the Boxster Spyder isn't quite as hardcore as the Cayman GT4. We can deduce this because word on the street is suggesting that Porsche is considering creating a Boxster Spyder GT4 to complement the Cayman GT4.

Why? Well, the response from Cayman GT4 buyers has exceeded expectations significantly. This doesn't come as a shock to me as many Porschephiles have exclaimed that they will be picking up their own GT4 in due time. Even owners of 918s are lining up for the GT4! What does that tell you?

Considering the Cayman GT4 largely uses parts from the 911 GT3, this would be one helluva Boxster, folks.

We'll keep our ears to the ground and let you know if we hear anything.

Spurred by demand for the Cayman GT4 exceeding all its internal predictions, a senior source at the company said, “We are looking at it right now. Much of the engineering has already been done for the Cayman, so we think this might be a good direction for us.”

A GT4 Boxster Spyder would most likely adopt the hardware seen in its Cayman equivalent. The Spyder already shares that car’s 3.8-litre engine but lacks its GT3-derived fully adjustable front suspension and bespoke rear suspension. It would also gain full GT3-specification brakes in place of the 911 discs on the Spyder, plus the Cayman GT4’s aerodynamic package.
