Report Card: Has Infiniti really improved their interiors?
With all this talk about the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class and how its interior stacks up against the competition, where does that leave Infiniti? Being the least expensive member of the Benz family in North America, the C-Class has often gotten criticism about its interior quality, fit, and finish.

In years past, until recently, the entire Infiniti line has been criticized for its cheap feeling and looking interior. Are things starting to turn around for Infiniti, and are they moving in the right direction?

What does the Report Card say for Infiniti, Autospies readers?

Here are real-world pictures of their newest interior, the G37 in African Rosewood and Washi Aluminum trim:

Report Card: Has Infiniti really improved their interiors?

The black leather looks okay, but that gray leather looks like plastic. It's too shiny for leather.

Infiniti interiors have improved greatly by the looks of the new G37.
the G37 seats look like an upgrade from the G35 coupe, great seats as they hug you like glove.

As a owner of the 05 sedan, I love the chrome finish with the black leather.
The problems with the interior are the buttons used on the center console are horrible (when you press them they get stuck).

Also the leather gets ceases and looks worn but its soft and comfortable. (Hope they improved on that with the new G37 as this only happens in a long term test)

The only thing I wish on the new G is the way they crammed the navigations button above the center console.

I have to agree, the lexus interior are way too overrated, they could take it to a whole new lever if they switched the painted plastic (like the IS center console) to wood.

Thats what i love of the new CTS. Leather and wood all through the center console with only plastic for buttons.

Audi are the best for making a plastic center console look and feel good. (like the A4,S5 etc...)

They absolutely are improving their interiors- so is Nissan. I think they (Infiniti) make a really competitive product, and much much sportier than Lexus.

infiniti uses REAL WOOD, PERIOD.

it is unique in that it has a matte finish to it, as opposed to a heavily lacquered finish which is prone to showing massive fingerprints and smudges.

The matte finished wood is very similar to a coffee table or furniture wood you would find in someone's home,.....nice work, Infiniti!!!

The difference is night and day between the prior interior and the present rendition. The greatest improvement is in the NVH characteristics and the quieter ride,.....eons ahead of the '04 I drove as a test car evaluator.

When the Q-45 comes back in 2010 as a 4 door Skyline GTR,...you will see the culmination of years of effort to become a tier one player and potentially even lead the category in quality, innovation, and performance.

BONZAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

Don't get me wrong, the interior has improved a lot since the last G 35, but it still isn't up to the standards of it's competitors. I like the idea of Infiniti, though. Fast performance cars for a good price. The only thing they lack is the high quality interiors.

New interior vs old interior = night vs day. I rented an 06 and was riddled with shame (as G35 is my favorite tiny luxury mobile) I later test drove an 07 and was pleasantly surprised.

Judging from the pictures it does look a bit cheap. Also the design is a bit of a copy from other premium brands.

But frankly that's all I can say about it since I've never actually sat in one.

The new interiors are markedly improved, an no longer have that awful "plastic-y" feel to them. I was shocked, truth be told...if the engine is as good as advertised, the G37 could be in my future.

Yeah, it does suck how they used seats and a steering wheel just like the Germans.

Good grief people.

Anyway, I do think the interior is improved for the better. However, I still wish all Infiniti vehicles would stop using the embossed logo on the seats. It just looks silly.

Did you even look at the pictures? The wood does not look like plastic at all- it is satin finished.

Probably because you can't tell the difference between real and fake. The new G uses real African Rosewood in matte finish. It doesn't take a genius to see that. BMW also uses a matte finish on the 7-Series.

I can't speak for the others, but in a weird way you are correct in a way. I really didn't finish high school- not like others anyway. Why? because I started attending college when I was 15. The college classes had a direct analog in high school that I was not required to attend, I received dual credit for all of my classes. Now I did have to attend some high school classes, but around 80% of my classes were at the college.

Because for most of them, the wood is very thin.
Germans tend to use thicker wood panels.

E90 3 interior is so cheap and gap is huge, looks way worse than my E46 3. The plastic feels about the same as 07 G, but G is much better resolved in terms of surface and lines. One thing for sure, BMW leather is much more durable than my 05 G. Hard to say about 07 G since they added extra lines to correct the problem.

Call me old schooled, but I still prefer the heavy satin finish in IS to mat finish for the wood. I mean, c'mon, you're using wood already for a sport sedan, why bother? it should be treated differently from the "sporty" anodized aluminum.

Nicer than the Lexus IS interior.

But I agree about the BMW interiors. The BMW interiors are starting to look cheap and MB appears to be taking this cost-cutting route as well. I'm not too sure what the big deal is about the IS350's interior. All I see is cheapness that is cleverly masked by the use of dark colors and subtle tones. Lexus is so good at making cheap look expensive that they ought to get an award for it. BMW and MB thought that they could trick people with cheap materials but I think they are better off leaving that to Lexus (they are the experts).

It looks nothing like a German car's interior. It's completely original.

Huge improvement over the 1st Gen, although, I liked the way the 1st Gen looked, it was the materials that hurt it.

The M35/M45 has one of the most beautiful interiors on the market, IMO. When my girlfriend bought her 2005 G35x I sat in the M in the showroom for nearly 25 minutes just staring at it in awe. Not only does it have its own "look", but it looks awesome.

Also, no one has mentioned the fact that they switched from that Amber lighting to the white/blue lighting. Awesome.

Damn Lexus, that sucks. I really thought the IS' interior was pretty nice at first. That day pic posted you as well was HORRIBLE. Im STILL in love with the exterior of the IS though. I would take the G with the grain over the aluminum. The wood looks real...

Having never sat in or even seen an Infiniti, I can't fully comment, but I have to say I don't like it.
The centre console and whole look of the interior looks like it belongs in a non-premium car. A non premium car with a very good interior, but not what I think is deserving of a luxury nameplate. Looks a bit of mess, especially on the doors. 3 types of metal/metal effect plastic? And I hate matt wood, gloss looks a lot better IMO.
It looks like something Renault or Honda or Peugeot could come up with, so it's good, but not great for the premium segment.

Just like I said Infiniti interiors a junk. Acura might not always use the best choice of interior materials, but atleast there are laid out nice. Buttons got to have buttons, I want my car to look like a runway at night.

Acura's interiors are surprisingly good... the TL is laid out amazingly well, and the new RDX and MDX are nothing short of phenominal.

That's why Infiniti is bitting Acura who always had the Blue Amber lighting throughout the interior.

they have improved alot i havnt sat in the new generation but the first generation was horribly cheap like the first cadillac cts, alot mags dont think it is up to par with the best in class, and still feels cheap and unrefined, but the g's are thousands less the competition they have to cut cost somewhere.....but i like the matte finish wood (like in the 7, and the cls), and the desighn is very original, good job infiniti.

The old interior was ok but the new one is outstanding. I never liked the light wood trim the Infinity used to have. The dark wood trim is much more elegant. I want to be sure this car has a conventional automatic transmission before it goes on my shopping list.

RICEMASTER

You can say the M5's interior looks cheap but you won't get away by saying the same thing about the M6. I had an M5 and although the materials were not top notch, it just served the purpose of the car, which is not really luxury, but sporty and luxury. The aluminium trim looked just fine and I loved it.

As for the M6, I sat in my friend's M6 and it had the black wood trim with nappa leather and it was just amazing. Light years ahead of my M5. Not only the interior looked very sporty, but also VERY luxury. Look how much wood there is in that car.

Everytime you want to bash M interiors remember, M is for motorsports.

No, they are average, they are still rebadged Nissans. That interior is better than the last G35 b/c the last G35 had the worst interior of any luxury badged car.
Anything is an improvement.

The G still looks a bit like a nissan.

The fit and finish still looks piece meal. Though the wood texture is better looking than the older models.
