The horsepower wars are strong, folks. With the likes of the Audi RS6, BMW M5 and Cadillac CTS-V, Mercedes-AMG has a lot to deal with when developing its all-new E63.

With the CTS-V just hitting streets equipped with 640 horsepower and 630 lb.-ft. of torque, it certainly is going to make buyers think twice about their high-performance sport sedan purchase. Mercedes knows that and from the sounds of it, is going to do its best to combat power with...more power. Sometimes you have to fight fire with fire, I guess.

The latest rumors are saying that the company is looking to squeeze out about 600 ponies via its 4.0-liter V8 motor found in the likes of the AMG GT and all-new C63. No word if that will be done via turbo or supercharging. AMG has shown in the past it is not partial to either methodology.

Now in the latest spy shots, the E63 is still camouflaged head-to-toe but it's clear the vehicle is quite far along in development. Note the finished front and rear ends. There isn't any heavy camouflage obstructing our view of it massive front air intakes and quad-tipped exhaust. From the side profile I have to say it is looking more like a C-Class than the big daddy S-Class.

The new Mercedes E63 AMG will have “the next step” in the development of Mercedes-AMG's 4.0-litre V8 engine, which means it will have “something in the range” of 600bhp, according to sources.

This is notably more power than that of the Mercedes-AMG GT sports car, which has 510bhp. The same engine is also set to appear in the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT3, where engineers are said to be targetting a power output close to the E63's 600bhp...
