Since the latest generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class launched it has dominated the large luxury sedan space. It is the undisputed champ when it comes to sales. While I think the all-new BMW 7-Series is a better driving product, the three-pointed star was out for about two years before the Bavarians could retort.

And my, my it looks like no one can stop the S' momentum.

As the challengers start to launch their respective attacks, it looks like Mercedes has started the development of its refreshed S-Class. While no specific details are really known at this point, speculation has some pretty good hunches.

Exterior modifications are expected to be minimal. Expect new wheels, an all-new front clip, updated exhaust finishers and likely updated headlights and taillights. No big deal there.

On the inside, however, is where the refreshed S is expected to get a bit of love. That would include an updated instrument panel and infotainment display as well as other little touches to up the technology ante. As BMW offered a slew of all-new tech in its 7, we're sure that Mercedes will not take it sitting down.

Although the current offerings powerplants are excellent, we expect for them to receive minor power increases across the board with an uptick in fuel efficiency. Can you say nine-speed automatic?

...Exterior changes for the updated S-Class will be minor, and these spy shots show some light camouflaging around the new front and rear bumpers, while earlier prototypes showing new LED headlight cluster designs.

More complex changes are expected for the interior. The S-Class's digital instrument cluster was one of its hallmark features when the car was launched, but rivals have been quick to adopt the technology in their premium models...
