Although it once seemed like a fantasy that Audi’s RS division would build a compact sedan with 400 or so horsepower, this dream is coming true. That’s because the RS3 sedan is on the way.

Spotted working its way around the world famous Nurburgring track in Germany, Audi has started the development process for the small but fierce sedan. These are the first pictures of the next-gen RS3.

If you recall, the U.S. market was not lucky enough to receive the last-gen RS3 hatchback. Turns out the next-gen model is confirmed to make its way stateside. As of now timing is a bit premature to make a definite call.

As one can expect with any RS-line product, it will boast more aggressive styling with larger air intakes up front and two oval exhaust tips in the rear. Of course it will be equipped with a honeycomb front grille, large diameter wheels and a big brake kit. Hopefully the four rings will come up with a creative solution to send over those lovely European seats that always seem to get blocked by officials in The States.

An educated guess would place the RS3 as a recipient of a 2.5-liter five-cylinder motor good for approximately 400 horsepower and over 350 lb.-ft. of torque. If those figures sound familiar that’s because they essentially mirror what’s found in the TT RS. Don’t hold your breath for a do-it-yourself transmission because most likely it will be a seven-speed dual-clutch unit.
