The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has always had a complex, if you ask me. Of the sedans in the lineup, it sat directly in the middle of the volume selling C-Class and flagship S-Class. More or less, it had middle child syndrome, which meant it "acted out," to make sure it was noticed.

Remember when it debuted that quad headlight set up? Not only did it look sharp, it was an innovative design for the 90s. It made an impact on people. With the C-Class mimicking the big daddy S, it was pretty far out to see a Mercedes that strayed so far out of its comfort zone.

With the latest E-Class' update though, it seems that the car is starting to lose that unique quality. And if these latest spy shots are any indication, it isn't going to get any better. The last collection of shots simply showed a chassis mule with a modified C-Class body on it. Now we're seeing the next-gen E's body for the first time.

Though it is heavily camouflaged, it's clear that the shape will be a bit more rounded off than the current-gen car that was more of a throwback to the original E. Check out the rear door's shut line — it looks like it's from two generations ago when that car showed up in Men in Black.

From what I can see, the front facade looks rather bland, actually. It has a large mouth grille and headlights looking a bit too close for comfort to the all-new C. Hopefully when the clothes start to come off the design will be a bit more differentiated.
