In recent years we've seen a lot of automakers take different routes and one of the most ambitious plans is being undertaken by Maserati. The company is looking to swell its production figures big time and for an Italian brand that more accustomed to building play things that mimic Ferraris, that seems like a tough task.

Well, it seems that it may be onto something. As we've seen the Ghibli starting to appear more and more frequently around our neighborhoods — even some Spies snapped them up — it seems that if the company builds a Porsche Cayenne rival it may be able to take a bite out of the Germans strong hold on the luxury sport-utility vehicle class.

The last time we saw the Maserati SUV was back at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. After many rumors though we're finally seeing that the company is putting something together. Seen in these very FIRST spy shots, clearly, Maserati has a running mule.

If you're expecting any glimpses into the vehicle's future design, you may be disappointed. That's because this research and development vehicle is just a Ghibli that's been jacked up and modified to account for a higher center of gravity — note the hump on the roof. According to what we've heard, still look to the Kubang concept for design cues.

...Almost three years on from the unveiling of the Maserati Kubang concept which served notice of the Italian manufacturer's plans to build a rival to the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X6, our spy photographers caught this early chassis testing mule testing on roads in Italy.

The test car appears to be based on a heavily modified and raised Ghibli body, although this isn't expected to look like the definitive production version, which will take cues from the Kubang. The high-riding stance and large wheels of the test mule suggests that it could be assessing a four-wheel-drive system...
