For years, Mercedes-Benz has built convertibles. There's just one problem: it never made a proper car to go up against the likes of the BMW 3-Series and the more recent Audi A5 convertible.

The E-Class cabriolet, for example, starts at about $60,000. The A5 and 4-Series start at about $44,000 and $48,000, respectively.

Now it seems the three-pointed star has wised up. That's because it's working on a C-Class cabriolet. Obviously, by doing so, this will bring down the cost to get into a Mercedes four-seater convertible and allow the company to compete more aggressively.

Regarding the spy shots, as you can see the car is buttoned up pretty tight. One thing that remains a mystery is if it will be a hard-top convertible or a soft top. We're guessing cloth so Mercedes can keep costs and weight down.
