At this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed Mercedes-Benz unveiled an all-new vehicle. Called the Mercedes-AMG GT R, it’s the GT just as if it has been eating raw meat for about two or so years straight.

While this more hardcore, Porsche 911 GT3 competitor is enticing for all the right reasons, we’ve been a bit curious as to where the drop-top GT has been hiding. Well, it’s turned out that the sports car was nabbed for the very first time during developmental testing.

Staying true to form, the three-pointed star is keeping it heavily camouflaged for the time being; however, some critical details remain patently obvious.

The first is that the vehicle will have a soft-top roof rather than the high-tech metal roofs we’ve been seeing high-end exotica make use of. Two examples that come to mind are the Ferrari 488 Spider and McLaren 650S/675LT.

Second, because the roofline is completely altered now, the GT Roadster will bear a strikingly close resemblance to the older era SLs and SLS AMG with a more rounded ass end. Check out the GT’s rear deck lid. It could be the squinty-ness of the rear taillights but this is reminding me of the original SL-Class vehicles.

I am really liking where this is heading.
