Recently spied doing some developmental testing was a blood red BMW 2-Series. At first glance it may  just appear to be an M235i, but it's not that at all.

Take a closer look.

The first thing that should jump out at you is that this vehicle has a chopped top. As far as we know BMW isn't in the hot rod business yet, so it's weird to say the least. In addition the hood is lightweight and blacked out, which we're assuming means it's different over the stock M235i — perhaps carbon fiber? Another thing I've noticed is that the vehicle's stance is most definitely not the same as a 2-Series. It's much lower front and rear. Around the back is a much larger truck-mounted lip spoiler.

All of this has us asking "What is it?"

As of now early speculation has the consensus focusing on the beginnings of a Z car, dubbed the Z2. I am not sure whether that's a stretch or not, but it looks like this chop top look is pretty final and not just a way to simulate a lower center of gravity. Could this actually be the much-anticipated M2 sporting a carbon fiber hood and roof?

What say you, Spies?
