Ever since the BMW i8 came into being, there's been a bit of excitement around whether or not BMW would take the roof off. And then came along the i8 Spyder.

It was a wonderful looking thing. To me, there's a bit of Ferrari 458 and McLaren 650 Spider going on with the rear decklid — I dig BMW's take on a roofless i8.

Here's the thing though.

For the first time we're seeing what the i8 Spyder may look like due to all-new spy shots. These are the first snaps of the i8 drop top and, if we're honest, it doesn't look much like a drop top. There's a bit of duct tape involved, too.

Perhaps BMW is taking its camouflage to the next level but if we're not mistaken, it looks like this i8 has a big glass panel that is removable or it just slides open. We'll see soon enough and we'll be keeping a close eye on this vehicle's development.

During the Industrypool on Tuesday 23th of August, I have filmed this BMW i8 Convertible test vehicle spotted spied testing on the Nürburgring, Nordschleife. You can clearly see the roof lines hidden with tape!

The current setup of a BMW i8 is a turbocharged 1.5-liter 3-cylinder power the rear wheels and an electric motor spin the front pair. Together they produce a peak output of 362 horsepower, enough to accelerate the i8 from 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds.
