In the world of sport sedans, there’s nothing quite as coveted as the BMW M5. Well, at least that’s how it use to be. Now that the Porsche Panamera, Mercedes-AMG E63 and Audi RS7 exist, it sure is having a tougher life.

Generation-over-generation there’s no question that BMW’s M cars change their DNA just a little bit.

Sometimes it’s for the better. Sometimes it’s for the worse.

That said, we’re particularly eager to see what the Bavarians concoct for the next-gen M5. Considered one of the motoring world’s icons, it was one of the first sedans to put sport in front of it. Now that the 7-Series as well as the i8 and i3 have really productionalized carbon fiber, it seems like this would be the perfect follow up application.

If you’re a skeptic you’re probably saying to yourself right now that it is all gimmicky. Rest assured, there’s no doubt that the use of carbon fiber construction will make the next-gen M5 a far better vehicle. Of course whether or not it will actually employ this is another matter. So, we’ll move on.

Recently caught on camera getting a workout on the world famous Nürburgring is the next-gen BMW M5. Although it has quite a bit of camouflage on, it’s easy to tell it’s the next-gen car via its details — note the headlights, taillights, new front kidney grille, rear decklid shape, etc.

This is the first clip where much of the heavy cladding is gone and we get a nice listen at the V8 that’s on its way.

So, what do you make of it, Spies?

This video features the new BMW M5 F90 being tested on the Nürburgring, Nordschleife. Power will likely continue to be provided by a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with an increased power output that will produce somewhere in the neighborhood of 620 horsepower. Footage was shot on Tuesday the 16th of August.
