In the past several years there's been a clear shift in the luxury automotive sector.

First, luxury sedans got 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines. Then it was the sport-utility vehicles. Case in point: The highly coveted Volvo XC90. And now it's time for the sports cars to get them.

Out of the group, the first out of the gate was the Porsche 718 Boxster. While we've heard some sound clips that serve as reference points, we're waiting for the real deal in the flesh to ultimately judge. Considering how AMAZING the Boxster's six-cylinder engine was, we're not expected it to top that note.

Next up is the refreshed Jaguar F-Type. While the company dropped the all-new F-Type SVR at the 2016 New York Auto Show (NYIAS), it is currently testing a four-cylinder around the Nürburgring. As of now no one knows too much about the 2.0-liter engine. We're expecting it to be turbocharged and feature upwards of 300 horsepower. Considering Jaguar Land Rover has gotten quite good at the four-banger thing we're sure it'll be a great motor; however, we're a bit concerned about the emotional appeal.

JLR's fours get a bit buzzy on the high end of the rev range.

Seen in these all-new spy shots, the F-Type four-cylinder looks largely the same except for its LED headlights, updated taillights and new front valence that ditches the large air intakes flanking the front grille. It looks like Jaguar may be going for a sleeker, cleaner take.

...Though initial reports suggested the car was running a V6 engine, DVLA records reveal the car is in fact using a 2.0-litre four-pot motor.

This petrol engine could either be based on the 237bhp one found in the 2.0-litre XE, or alternatively it could be Jaguar's upcoming 2.0-litre petrol Ingenium engine. Either way, insiders expect power output to reach as much as 300bhp...
